NHS Hellenic Classic 2010

We enjoyed a wonderful "Hellenic Classic" Weekend at the luxurious Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, the weather was perfect and the "parea" even better.  Ariana Savalas proved that "the fruit indeed does not fall from the tree" showcasing her singing talents and perpetuating the Savalas legacy for future generations to enjoy.

Tony Orlando and his exceptionally talented band provided a riveting performance delivered with incredible passion and energy that Tony attributed to his Greek heritage.  Tony applauded NHS and urged that everyone stay involved with NHS and its Programs.

The golfers enjoyed two world class courses at Troon & TPC.  Congratulations to Steve Padis, John Grillos as winners of low gross and low net scores as well as all the other trophy winners.

The Symposium included a presentation on the classics from Harvard Classics scholar Prof. Gregory Nagy, a very informative and interesting presentation on the benefits of the Greek Mediterranean diet and lifestyle and were "wowed" by Jim Gianopulos incredible presentation "Hollywood & Hellenism--From Aristotle to Alexander (Payne)."  Jim's "Tour de Force" presentation was worthy of an Academy Award by itself.  The audience marveled and celebrated the accomplishments of the host of Greeks involved in every aspect of the motion picture industry and Jim certainly made us all proud of our Greek heritage which continues to influence modern society.

Special guests visits were made by former California Governor, Gray Davis, and Nevada Congresswoman, Dina Titus.  Many thanks to them for stopping by.

Greek Glendi night was complemented by the talented Cosmos that performed many celebrated Greek favorites and new music which was followed by the NHS Texas Hold-Em and Backgammon Tournaments in the Banquet Reception Lobby which was transformed into a Kafenio

Attendees also were informed about the status of NHS'  Programs underway and further expansion plans to grow NHS and its complement of Programs.

NHS Programs--HERITAGE GREECE
Journey to Greece
Sending young Greek Americans to Greece is perhaps the best way to instill a strong sense of identity, forge long-lasting relationships and preserve Greek heritage in a meaningful and relevant way.  Beginning this summer.

NHS is co-sponsoring a joint session special trip for 80 students attending the AHEPA/University of Indianapolis "Journey to Greece" Program on a special educational and cultural cruise to several sites of antiquity.

NHS is also sponsoring a special field trip to Athens and the Acropolis for all 350 campers attending both summer sessions of Archdiocese's Ionian Village Summer Camp in Greece.

NHS is also proud to announce that 15 finalists from a candidate pool of over 40 qualified applicants will embark on the Heritage Greece Program in collaboration with the American College of Greece, Europe's largest and oldest American university.  The trip is a gift from NHS to the 15 participants that will be teamed up with a peer group of Greek students in Athens.  The Heritage Greece participants will spend two weeks together experiencing Greece, finding out more about their Greek identity and completing a 3 credit specially tailored course that is educational, meaningful and fun.

The 15 students are from as far as Alaska, California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan & Texas representing universities such as Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, Boston College, the University of California, Arizona and Connecticut.  Congratulations to the 15 students and to their proud parents.

The Heritage Greece Program is made possible through your support and next year we hope to accommodate many more of these fine applicants that want to know more about their Greek heritage in long-lasting and meaningful way.

Special thanks also to President David Horner and his staff at the American College of Greece, for their hard work in ensuring the success of the Heritage Greece Program.

Today's young Greek American professionals will be tomorrow's leaders.  By staying connected the bonds to heritage are sustained. NHS has created a social networking website tailored to meet the needs of young Greek American professionals through out the nation.  The website will provide resources, tools and communications capability.

The website will launch in early Summer and will feature regional links that provide content, news, events and information from the regional and local level.  NHS will supplement the "online" experience with regional networking events bringing young Greek American professionals together for social, cultural and business networking events.  Visitors to the NHS Virtual Village can "plug-in" and instantly belong to a virtual community shared by their peers.  NHS is leveraging modern day technology to meet the next generation's needs in a fun way at the pace and depth left up to the individual to determine.

NHMuseumNHS Programs--
HOMER Program
NHS and the National Hellenic Museum are collaborating on an exciting program that preserves the life stories of the Greek experience permanently.  Recently, NHS coordinated 27 interviews in the metropolitan Washington, DC area that included a "Who's Who" of the Greek American community including most of the Greek American congressional delegation.  Participants recount their family's experiences in the U.S. from the time they immigrated to the present day.  These life experiences will be archived, arranged by region and stored in a permanent collection.  The archives will be accessible online in the Fall.

Stay tuned for the updated version of the NHS website in June--the new website will be easier to navigate and have a password protected interface for NHS members' use.

NHS has continued to grow and fulfill our mission of reserving our heritage for the next generation.  NHS Programs are already making a difference--thanks to you.
