Dear NHS Member,
We enjoyed a wonderful "Renaissance Weekend" despite the weather which did little to dampen the spirits of an outstanding complement of guests.  We laughed with Basile, were informed and inspired by distinguished panelists and even squeezed in some golf, a poker tournament in between the dancing, dinner and great parea.   We were treated like royalty at the Mar-a-Lago Club and greeted by Governor Charlie Christ--one of our own.  Governor Christ took time to meet everyone and impressed us with his graciousness and charm.  On Sunday, several golfers were treated with a visit by legendary Jack Nicholas.

NHS launched its Oral Archives Program at the Ritz Carlton Palm Beach in collaboration with the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago and recorded the life story of 15 of the attendees as permanent records that future generations will enjoy.  The Program will visit cities throught the U.S. recording and preserving life stories that will be accessible online for all to learn from and enjoy.

NHS' plans for the remainder of the year include the launch of two new programs that will help preserve our heritage for the next generation.

NHS Programs--NHS Virtual Village
Young Adults

Today's young Greek American professionals will be tomorrow's leaders.  By staying connected the bonds to heritage are sustained. NHS is creating a social networking website tailored to meet the needs of young Greek American professionals through out the nation.  The website will provide resources, tools and communications capability.  The website will feature regional links that provide content, news, events and information from the regional and local level.  NHS will supplement the "online" experience with regional networking events bringing young Greek American professionals together to social, cultural and business networking events.  Visitors to the NHS Virtual Village can "plug-in" and instantly belong to a virtual community shared by their peers.  NHS is leveraging modern day technology to meet the next generation's needs.
NHS Programs--NHS Birthright Greece
Journey to Greece
Sending young Greek Americans to Greece is perhaps the best way to instill a strong sense of identity, forge long-lasting relationships and preserve Greek heritage in a meaningful and relevant way.  Beginning this summer, (August, 2009) NHS will co-sponsor a trip for 35 students attending the AHEPA/University of Indianapolis "Journey to Greece" Program to the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople and to  Thessaloniki, Meteora & Sounion.  The students will meet with His All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and learn first hand all about Byzantium, its impact and relevance.  NHS is establishing its own peer group program for next summer with the leading American educational institutions as NHS strategic partners.  The trips will provide first-time young visitors to Greece with a life-changing experience.  The youth will spend time together with their peers in Greece learning about their heritage and each other.  The trip will be expanded to make a long-lasting impact on the next generation.

NHS Programs--
Oral Archives
NHS and the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago are collaborating on an exciting program that will preserve the life stories of the Greek experience permanently.  Launched at Renaissance Weekend, the Museum conducts videotaped interviews of participants that describe their family's experience.  Participants recount how their respective family immigrated to the U.S. up to the present day.  These life experiences will be archived, arranged by region and stored in a permanent collection.  The archives will be accessible online in the Fall.
Dr Markos
Upcoming Special Event
During Renaissance Weekend, Dr. Lou Markos, Classics Professor and prolific author presented a riveting lecture entitled "The Heirs of Athens" in which he described the impact and relevance of ancient Greece in the modern world.  The Congressional Hellenic Caucus, NHS & Odyssey Magazine will sponsor Dr. Markos' presentation in Congress this Fall.  The presentation will look at present day issues through a classic prism.  More to come on this exciting event in Washington.
Despite the challenging times, the National Hellenic Society is growing.  We are sponsoring important programs that make a difference to the next generation.  Our vision is taking form and substance.  Thank you for your support.
