TRAILS
2010 Trail Projects

We've got a great variety of trail projects planned for this year's building season.  Following is a list of projects and their status:

Sourdough Canyon/Bozeman Creek Trailhead
Status - Design and permitting are well underway thanks to donations from REI and DA Davidson in April.
Funding - We received over $4,000 in new donations in May, but still have a long way to go to reach our $50,000 goal for completing design and permitting and installing the vault toilet this year.  If you use the trailhead, please consider a special gift to support this project.

East Gallatin Recreation Area
Status - The trails are once again getting damaged by flooding from the East Gallatin River and one key section of trail may be lost entirely.  GVLT is in the process of planning some major reroutes to be constructed later this summer and in 2011 once we secure additional funding.  We'll reclaim all closed trail sections and new trails will employ extensive boardwalk to preserve vegetation and keep the trails viable during floods.
Funding - We have approximately $7000 from a MT Department of Fish Wildlife & Parks Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant and a Bozeman Parkland Improvement grant.  The boardwalk we're envisioning will cost several times this amount.

Bozeman Pond
Status - We are planning a connector trail behind the Mall linking the Bozeman Pond Trail to the West Side Trail, as well as two trail information kiosks on the West Side Trail and one at Bozeman Pond.  This short connector is complex and expensive due to the need to engineer the trail around the Mall's detention pond.
Funding - We have a $4800 Bozeman Parkland Improvement grant and Allied Engineering is making a generous in-kind donation.  We still need to raise approximately $8,000, including three $1000 kiosk sponsorships.

McIlhattan Road
Status - In partnership with the Bridger Creek Homeowners Association we are planning to construct a section of trail along with east side of McIlhattan road from the landfill to Augusta.  In coming years, we hope to extend this trail east to Story Mill Rd. and North to the Snowfill.
Funding - We have over $4000 in RTP funding, the Bridger Creek HOA will make a substantial investment in the project and Morrison Maierle is making a generous in-kind donation of engineering work.

Langohr Park - Gallagator Trail
Status - We've completed new totems and signage on the Gallagator Trail and a rockscape at a popular play spot on Mathew Bird Creek in Langohr Park.  We're planning a small natural playground to replace old playground equipment on the east side of Mathew Bird Creek along with an interpretive sign about the extensive stream restoration work we completed several years ago.
Funding - We have a $10,000 Bozeman Parkland Improvement grant and Greenspace Landscaping generously donated the rockscape work.

Parking Lots
Status & Funding - We have $4000 in RTP funding for improvements to the trailhead parking lots at the Painted Hills Trail on the north side of Kagy and the Sundance Springs trails at the dead end of Sundance Dr.

Trail Maintenance
We also have Recreational Trails Program funding for trail maintenance throughout the trail system.  If you know of problem spots that need maintenance, please let us know.

County Parks & Trails Plan Public Comment
Mark your calendar!  Public comment on the Gallatin County Interconnect parks & trails plan will begin on July 12th.  This plan presents an important opportunity to achieve quality parks and trails as the County grows.  Visit the County website for more information and updates.
WAYS TO GIVE
Did you know that it cost over $30,000 to build a mile of trail? In its 20 year history, GVLT has helped expand the Main Street to the Mountains trail system to over 60 miles. The month of June is filled with exciting trail activities, but our dedicated professional staff work all year to ensure that our trail system helps connect our communities. Even if you can't participate in GVLT's exciting June trail events, you can still support community trails! Please visit www.gvlt.org and click on Donate now to make a contribution. We need your financial support to continue our vision of Main Street to the Mountains.
20 YEARS - GVLT
Throughout our 20th Anniversary year GVLT eNews will include highlights from our History.

Trails Day
GVLT has organized Trails Day events every year since the first National Trails Day in 1993.  In 1998 and 1999 we won national "Trails for Tomorrow" awards for "excellence in the development and maintenance of recreational trails, for commitment to the building of community partnerships, and for achievements, devotion and inventiveness in the celebration of National Trails Day."  Over the years, hundreds of volunteers have spread tons of gravel, wrestled miles of rusty barbed wire and had a great time building, maintaining and improving the Main Street to the Mountains trails.  Thank you for your efforts!  We hope to see you this Saturday, June 5th for the 18th annual National Trails Day.
