STEWARDSHIP

News from the field

GVLT has partnered with 73 private landowners over the years to permanently conserve more than 32,000 acres of land around the Gallatin Valley from development. And we're constantly working to conserve new lands too. But our work doesn't end there. We visit each of these properties every year to work with landowners and ensure that their land remains as valuable habitat, open space and productive farmland. It's takes a lot of time and effort but the rewards are evident with each visit. So far this season we've encountered black bears, a newborn pronghorn, innumerable waterfowl and even a mountain lion... much of this within sight of downtown Bozeman!

Check out http://gvlt.org/conservation.html for more on our work to help save the lands that make this area great.

TRAILS

News from the Community Trails

Get your dog a drink at the Snowfill - Thanks to a generous donor and the cooperation of the Bozeman Parks Department we installed a well with a hand pump this summer at the Snowfill on McIlhattan Road.  Now on hot sunny days, there is water for all the dogs enjoying this 37-acre, off-leash recreation area.

Senska Conservation Easement Trail Access - With help from a Montana Conservation Corps crew, GVLT constructed a new access trail off of Sourdough road to the trail loop along Bozeman Creek on the Senska conservation easement.  To enjoy this peaceful patch of cottonwood forest, walk or bike (there's no parking) to the southwest corner of the Church/Sourdough/Kagy intersection.  The new trail access cuts down the Sourdough Road embankment at the telephone pole 170 feet south of the intersection.

Langohr Park Pollinator Garden - In partnership with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the national Pollinator Partnership, along with volunteer crews from NRCS, THRIVE and Ligocyte Pharmaceuticals, GVLT coordinated the creation of a pollinator garden with interpretive signage adjacent to the community gardens at Langohr Park off the Gallagator Trail.  To learn more about pollinator-friendly gardening and land management and why it's important visit www.pollinator.org or visit the garden at Langohr Park.  Note that we are seeking a donor to add a bench to the garden.
TRAVELERS FOR OPEN LAND

Click here to find out more about a unique and exciting program called Travelers for Open Land. This is the first statewide program of its type in the country, and it has the potential to provide new resources for private land conservation in Montana.

News from August
Evening on the Land - THANK YOU

Saturday, August 15th 2009 the Gallatin Valley Land Trust hosted the first Evening on the Land

As local stewards, GVLT strives to preserve a timeless landscape to enjoyed by all. The majority of the food for the special dinner was graciously donated by multiple growers (listed below) around the Gallatin Valley, many of whom have permanently conserved their family lands by granting a conservation easement. Our silent auction experiences offered special insights into activities in the valley and beyond. Our hope was for the Evening to inspire the guests to join in creating a strong, sustainable community. With the combination of amazing food, rock'in music, enticing auction packages, and great guest we had the good fortune of raising over 24,ooo!
