Blue Ridge Winter
Will there be a "Spring" Market?
Greetings!

With a truly memorable winter beginning to give way to the strength of the sun's rays as we move toward spring, there is nonetheless a continuing sense that "something" not normal is still playing out in our fair land.

Yet optimism is what most of us feel as we watch the mountains of snow melt, and look forward to the budding of trees and the arrival of  birds and flowers in spring. Will this year bring the typical euphoria of the new year emerging from the gray of winter to the promise of economic renewal in the months ahead?

Not if what I've been reading and studying has any merit

I've just finished one of the most compelling books addresslng our national economic plight that I have come across in the past three years. The title is"Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy".  Written by Joseph E Stiglitz , Columbia professor and winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences(2001), this is a hard book to put down.

Joseph StiglitzWhile many writers have covered specific areas of our recent economic meltdown with great specificity, Stiglitz puts the entire morass into an understandable framework and comprehensible perspective. The direction he portrays of our revolving door political and economic interplay is worrisome at best.

This book is one ever thinking adult in America should read.

More commercial tenants are showing up, but office space and strip center retail is still struggling...

Here in Purcellville, but also in Clarke County, Winchester, and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, small entrepreneurs are once again roaming the area in search of a "deal". It's been a long time since the backbone of small business has been visible in this area in numbers that matter.

With "users"(as opposed to investors) once again re-appearing in the market, properties which have been lying dormant for some time are now garnering offers, leases, and contracts.

Prospects for office space are once again mostly absent from the mix of inquiries I've been fielding this past month.

Shopping center retail is still under a great deal of pressure, with a very uncertain future here in the next 6-9 months.

Affordable Single Family market
continues to plod along, but higher end properties are still slow

And the outlook going forward holds little promise for a turn around of any consequence. That said, the good news is that there appears to be stability in the market at the moment. So make your decisions about what you want to do about housing based on the reality you see today. As yet, no one is anticipating any upward movement in prices for now.

On a personal note..

Kindle II Like many of you, in this tough economy, I have agonized over making unnecessary outlays for anything.... But a Kindle !! seemed like the perfect "thing" to permit me to satisfy my voracious appetite for reading while still being compact enough to allow me to travel without toting more weight.
So I bought one.

The prospect of being able to, on a whim, download instantly the EXACT BOOK I wanted to read was compelling. And it IS easy to carry, easy to read, and incredibly convenient.

So I showed it to me wife, Susan, feeling certain she would share my enthusiasm for this quite useful gadget, which she did. Big mistake.

Sitting together quietly one Sunday evening, each of us buried in our reading, she sighed, then closed her most recent novel. She was done, but wanted to read another book.

Since I was immersed in the newspaper, without hesitation, I handed her my new toy and showed her how to search for, and download, another book by one of her favorite authors.

That was many weeks ago, and I never laid hands on it again.

So I bought another. Now we both can read at our leisure, and since we used the same account to buy them, any book she buys, I can read, and vice versa.  Way cool!

Many homeowners are still struggling...

If you are finding it difficult to keep up with the payments on your home, or know of someone who is, ask them to stop buy to chat about their options. For many of these folks, it may be the very first time in their lives that a issue of this magnitude needs to be resolved. There's no charge for the consultation, and some of the insights I've gathered from years of wrestling with these challenges may just prove beneficial. Call me, or stop by.

NORTHERN NECK

OF VIRGINIA
Northern Neck of Virginia
Now is a great time to think about buying a waterfront property in Virginia's famous "Northern Neck". Three and a half hours from here on good divided dual highways without dealing with the Rte 95 corridor or the Bay Bridge.

It's like turning back the hands of time. Picturesque settings like this can be found on countless creeks, rivers, and coves in this magical land.

As a member of the Northern Neck Association of Realtors (NNAR) since 1997, and as a former owner of waterfront property in Reedville, I'd love to share some ideas about how best to tie down a "placeholder" on the water for your affordable enjoyment.
