 No Soul for Sale
Ballroom Marfa at No Soul For Sale - A Festival of Independents

Featuring the work of
ERIKA BLUMENFELD
Turbine Hall, Tate Modern, London

Friday 14 and  Saturday 15 May 2010, 10am - Midnight
Sunday 16 May 2010, 10am - 6pm

Ballroom Marfa is excited to announce our participation in the second iteration of No Soul for Sale, A Festival of Independents, which will be hosted by the Tate Modern, London as part of its 10th Anniversary celebrations.

The festival will bring together over 70 of the most exciting and innovative independent art spaces, non-profit organizations, and artists' collectives from around the world who will take over the Tate's iconic Turbine Hall from May 14 to May 16. Under the direction of artist Maurizio Cattelan and curators Cecilia Alemani and Massimiliano Gioni, festival participants will exhibit side by side without partitions or walls, creating a pop-up village of global art for visitors to explore. From Shanghai to New York, Barcelona to Melbourne, Seoul to Berlin, participants will contribute an eclectic mix of cutting-edge  installations, music, performance, and film, presented in an unconventional, do-it-yourself style.

At this year's No Soul for Sale, Ballroom Marfa is proud to present the work of Erika Blumenfeld, the first artist to have a residency with us, back in 2004. Blumenfeld is now one among scores of artists Ballroom Marfa has supported through the commission and exhibition of new work.

As part of the festival's events program, Ballroom Marfa will present an artist talk with Blumenfeld, who will speak on the evolution of her practice, beginning with her 2005 exhibition, Lunation 1011, to the genesis of her current work, The Polar Project. This trajectory follows the artist's early creation of light recordings -- working directly with light and light sensitive materials -- and continues through her ongoing documentation of polar environments.

Through non-traditional approaches to photography, Blumenfeld explores and documents the subtle shifts in atmospheric, astronomic, and environmental phenomena, recording light's footprint throughout the daily and seasonal cycles. Many of her projects have involved research in specific areas of scientific study and have seen Blumenfeld collaborate with organizations including the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, California; the McDonald Observatory, Texas; and the Interpolar Transnational Art Science Constellation, South Africa/Antarctica.

Ballroom Marfa is once again honored to be showcased within an inspiring network of art organizations that are being recognized for their unique visions and their creative strategies for making art accessible.
