Louise S. O'Connor was born in Victoria, Texas, a fifth-generation member of the O'Connor family that has ranched the Texas Coastal Bend since 1834. She has documented the 164-year-old culture by interviewing and photographing several hundred men and women who have spent their lives on the ranches of the Texas Gulf Coast. She began photographing on her family's ranches in the early 1970s
while studying photography and attending colleges around Texas. In
1996, O'Connor was awarded an Honorary Master of Arts from Bath
University College in Bath, England for her work in the preservation of
Texas history.
Louise O'Connor continues to deepen her historical research using oral interviews and photographs. Her portraits of the people of the Texas Coastal Bend have been exhibited all over the United States. In addition, she has authored the following books: Cryin' For Daylight, A Ranching Culture in the Texas Coastal Bend;Tales from the San'tone River Bottom, Volume One: Origins/Volume Two: Historic Times; and Milam's Revelation Cookbook and co-authored Marfa (Images of America: Texas).
