Faithful friends and supporters:

Here we are again, one month closer to the end of yet another year. 10 months into the year, and we continue to reflect on the generous support we've received from you for our Troops! This month was especially momentous as we took the opportunity to honor the victims of Patriot's Day 10 years ago, the genesis of the wars we so fervently wish would end, yet which provide us a platform for us to encourage the Troops we faithfully support.

Sept 11 Walk ParticipantsWe had a wonderful turn out for the Patriot Day Walk of Remembrance (September 11). More than 70 people showed up to walk the two miles and honor the memory of those that were lost on that day. The banner, donated by Ink Dots, was mailed to a service member in Afghanistan. Thanks to all for your showing of support: Lanie Evans (Cole's Crossing in Cypress) for the donation of water, students from Cy Ranch HS Key Club (even though it was the morning after homecoming!), Brownie troop 14501 and many families / individuals.

Another big thank-you goes out to Molly's Adopt a Sailor organization. Molly shipped two large cases of goods for our Fall care packages. Our partnership with Molly's organization is an example of combining efforts in order to support the warfighter. MAS, like Cypress Cares, is non-profit and relies completely on monetary and in-kind donations to operate the Troop Support Programs. MAS ships hundreds of packages per month via a distribution network of volunteers all across America. Just one more way that warfighters are getting the support they deserve!

The wonderful students of Cy Woods High School band found a great way to show their support of our troops and commemorate 9/11 at the same time. Thank you Ms. Jane Jackson for helping the students to sell small US Flags the week prior to 9/11. CWHS flagsThe students that "sponsored" the flag got to write a note to a service member on that flag before the band put them out to line the entry of the school on Sept 9. All who came and wen at CWHS that day got a great view of 200 US Flags being displayed in honor of all who lost their lives 10 years ago. The picture here just doesn't do justice to the view we had, but you get the idea!

Ongoing Events

If you are a mom, wife or girlfriend of a Soldier, Sailor. Marine or Airman, there is a new support group out there for you. Thanks to CC supporter and new Army mom, Leslie Lawson, there will soon be a new group that will meet over lunch or coffee, to talk, laugh or cry with you while your service member is deployed. This is a helpful and comforting way for you to find support and vent frustrations during the emotional roller coaster of deployment and military life.  If you are interested in being a part of this group, please email Leslie.

Stay Tuned...

Cypress Cares is working on a fresh website redesign, so keep visiting www.cypress-cares.org as we hope soon you will be able to see the changes! Big thanks to Jeffry Roque of Roqwest Consulting, our website host and designer, for his expertise in this area!

2012 and beyond...

Hard to believe, but we're already planning for 2012. Is it me, or does time seem to be picking up speed around here? Currently, our box packing's are scheduled for February 25, May 19 and October 6. We plan to host one large packing each month (preferably hosted at a local church in partnership with the congregation for collecting goodies and packing boxes). If you would like to get your church involved, please have a representative from the church email Raquel about scheduling an event.

Also, keep in mind that we welcome small group events, like May's nursing home packing or September's packing at Caldwell Companies. Caldwell Co. employees gathered items in September and filled 30 boxes on September 29. The employees of Caldwell Companies raised the money to purchase the goods themselves as well as the funds needed to ship the boxes overseas, all Cypress Cares did was to help get the ball rolling; our own Alicia Powell and Melissa Hardy helped them get it all packaged up and to the post office. Laurie Stephens of Caldwell Co. was our point of contact that helped organize the effort, and you can do the same for your office, scout troop, civic group or neighborhood in 2012!

We want your pictures!

Cypress Cares is developing a video-montage for our new website. We want to include any service member that has been a recipient of a Cypress Cares package in the past. This tribute will demonstrate the reason why we do what we do. If you have a uniformed photo of your service member, please email it to us! Send an email with your photo (candid or official uniform photos will work) to info@cypress-cares.org with "Video Picture" in the subject line. Kathi Nunez will work on this montage for us and we hope to have it complete by Christmas. On a side note: Kathi is developing her business as a professional photographer, in case you are in need of some Holiday or Just-Because photos!

Thank you all for your support. We couldn't do this without each and every one of you. Now, be sure to take some time this week to kick back, sip a cinnamon- or pumpkin- or Fall-flavored something-or-other, and enjoy the cooler weather (or at least turn your AC down a few notches and hope that mulish Mother Nature takes the hint!).

Happy Fall,

Link your Kroger and Randall's Cards!

You know those cards you carry for Kroger and Randall's grocery stores? Well if you "link" your card to Cypress Cares, we will benefit by receiving a check from each store to help support our cause.
  • Kroger, click here to get the letter which you need to take to the store and have Customer Service link your card to.
  • Randall's, just let the Customer Service personnel know you want to link to organization #12476...that's us!
Tell your friends to link their cards as well; it may not amount to much in terms of money, but it means a lot to the service member who gets to smile at mail call!

Volunteer Corner

We'd like to shine a little spotlight on another volunteer here at Cypress Cares.

This month, we extend our thanks to Ms. Elaine Olbrych.  Elaine started supporting our effort in mid 2010 when we began discussing a box packing event at Foundry United Methodist Church. A very active member of the church, Elaine works with the Stay In Touch ministries there, and she was eager to help Cypress Cares reach out to some service members from the church. We're glad that she's stayed active and informed about all Cypress Cares does and she helps to spread the word about our effort.

Elaine, we are blessed to have you helping us out!

Attention all Marathon Runners!!

We know that running marathons and triathalons has become a big thing these days.  Running has also become a great way to raise money for non-profit organizations. Team Red White & Blue, an organizaton dedicated to helping injuried Veteran's in their transition from the frontlines to the civilian world, will be involved in several marathons this year, including one being held on Veteran's Day in Houston.

For more information on this event, or others which TRWB will be running, please visit their website.

Feedback from the Frontlines,

Dear Cypress Cares,

I am a  Marine in the Infantry, currently deployed to Afghanistan. I don't know how you guys received my name, but your care packages have really brought some joy on some sorrowful days. My squad and myself are very thankful for the treats and hygiene products. The relief your soap and a few bottles of water (a grunt shower) have brought is undescribable. It really cleaned up our stanch, haha! I just wanted to take some time and say thank you. I will never forget your kindness and generosity.

EDITORIAL by Courtney Chirdo

Courtney and James ChirdoTwo words come to mind when I think about this deployment: cookies and Christ. Both sustain my happiness and wellbeing. Both comfort my soul and help me though challenging times. Even as I'm beginning to write my thoughts for this editorial, I'm listening to Christian music and running to the oven every 10 minutes to put in a new batch of cookies. I have always been a cookie lover. The only types of cookies I don't like are low fat and burnt. Similarly, I have always loved Christ. Born and raised Christian and proud of it!

Just before my husband Jim left for his first deployment in Afghanistan, I bought a cookbook entitled 400 Sensational Cookies. Let me just say for the record that I am well on my way to making all 400 cookies. Almost every week I bake a new batch of cookies to include in Jim's care package. I have enlisted the help of a friend to share her baking secrets with me so that my cookies arrive to Jim as fresh as possible. Jim has never had any complaints with my cookies, although I imagine that even stale cookies would taste better than MREs. You better believe that I smiled from ear to ear when Jim told me that my cookies were a hit amongst his buddies. The white chocolate macadamia nut cookies have been the favorite thus far.

Jim has been my best friend since high school. We were on swim team together and we swam in the same lane everyday at 6am morning practice. I like to joke that he saw me at my worst from the very beginning. He joined the United States Marine Corps immediately after graduating from high school. Being a Marine was definitely Jim's calling and neither of us has ever doubted that. I have had the privilege of standing by his side as a girlfriend, fiancée and now wife throughout the last 3 ½ years of his career in the Marine Corps. For the past two years he has been stationed overseas in Okinawa, Japan while I was getting my degree at Texas A&M University. Jim left for Afghanistan the day after I graduated from Texas A&M in mid-May. We are hopeful that he will receive 30 days post deployment leave when his deployment is over in December. If he does then this will be the longest amount of time we have spent together in the past 4 years.

Jim is a reconnaissance Marine. He runs missions in the dead of night and attempts to sleep in the sweltering desert sun. His FOB (forward operating base) has little to no amenities, but that is the only way he would have it. However, the one amenity we are both thankful for is the satellite phone that he uses to call me. My heart has never been so happy to see a random number come across my caller ID. I live off 20 minute phone calls once a week on a phone that cuts out at least 3 times while we're talking. Neither of us complains though because getting to hear each other's voice is the best medicine for an achy heart.

Needless to say, not living on a military base means that I'm not surrounded by other Marine wives. There are very few women my age that I know of that can relate to my situation. For example, I don't think many young wives have the motivation to keep their home clean because of a fear of a knock on the door from men in military uniforms. I also don't think that many wives give their husband a gift once a week, but I do. I send Jim a care package every week, and not only does it help me pass the time and give me something to look forward to, but it is also a huge motivational lift for him. I do my best to be attentive to his needs, despite being half a world away. Although this seems fairly obvious, Jim is constantly on my mind. I'm always wondering where he's at, what he's doing, when he's going to call, praying that him and his buddies are safe, and dreaming about our reunion in December. I don't think that a lot of people understand what it's like to have a person on your mind that much and the ways that it can mess with your mind.

Before Jim left on this deployment, I came to the realization that I wasn't going to have any control over the situation in Afghanistan. It's not like I could drag him off the battlefield every day, tell him to put his toys away, and make him come home for dinner. Naturally I turned toward the only person who I knew could watch over my husband while I was half a world away. In Christ, I found a friend that could relate to my sufferings better than anyone I knew. Through prayer and sacrifice, my relationship with Christ Jesus has been transfigured. Coming into greater communion with Christ has given me the strength and perseverance to make it through every day. After all, every day that passes is one day closer to being reunited with my husband. It certainly does not mean that all my days are easy, but rather that I have confidence in God's plans for my life with my husband. I also have to give a shout out to my faith community that has supported me with love and encouragement and without whom my sanity may not be possible.

Between cookies and Christ, my days are slowly but surely passing by. Four months down, three months to go. I have a continual countdown going on in my head. "One day" became a constant saying between Jim and I whenever we would talk about our plans for the future. While some days it feels like this deployment will drag on forever, I know that "one day" it will be over and we'll be together. And it seems only natural to me that my husbands scheduled time to return home is in December, when we eat tons of delicious holiday cookies and celebrate Christ's birth. Looks like I'll have a something extra to celebrate this Christmas!

Semper Fi,

Courtney Chirdo
