Hello Cypress Cares faithful!

Well, it's been quite a month! Between a week-long vacation for our Director, Raquel and then nearly a week of her computer/Internet in the office being down, we were severely out of touch for a while.  We sure hope that we've gotten caught up on things, but if not, please be sure to let us know!

The kiddos around here might have still been out on summer break, but Cypress Cares didn't take a break this last month. We've had a lot of things going on and more in the works for later this year.  Read on to learn more!

  • COL Lewis and Team BesmayaSaturday August 6 was a box packing at Foundry United Methodist Church in Houston. The 200+ boxes were filled with goods that had been gathered by congregation members at Foundry as part of their 'brown bag drive' in July and they have already been met with lots of grateful smiles and thanks from troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Says COL Tom Lewis of Spring, TX, (pictured right with others from COS Hammer in Iraq) from his post in Iraq, "Goodie boxes and Soldiers/Airmen go together like peas in a pod".  Or was that Forrest Gump? The banner was provided by Ink Dots Printing Solutions and signed by the congregation of Prince of Peace Catholic Community during this year's Lenten Season.
  • Our next large scale event(s) won't be held until Saturday, October 1 and Saturday, October 8 at Cypress TaeKwon-Do and Church of the Good Shepherd, respectively. Both events are Halloween Treats for Troops packings. Yes, chocolate will melt between here and there, but remember, M&Ms will NOT! And there are literally hundreds of other candies that we can ship. Never forget gum and mints, and alternative 'treats' like granola bars, Slim Jim jerky sticks, dried fruits, Cracker Jacks, etc.. And as we are sending lots and lots of sweets in October, we're thinking "dental care" as well. We'd love to include a few toothbrushes, toothpaste and flossers with each box, just to help out! A few "regular" care packages will be shipped at each event as well, but our focus is Halloween.
  • We're excited to have another small packing event coming up in September. The employees of Caldwell Companies are gathering items and will fill their packages later this month. They are having a 'friendly competition' in their departments to raise funds and purchase items and a few of us will be on hand to help them pack their boxes and ship them to troops on our mailing list. If your place of business would like to hold a similar event, please let us know. Someone will be happy to come out, talk to the staff and help set something up.
  • Our thanks, again, to the staff and customers/patients of the Longenbaugh Veterinary Clinic! They have been making regular contributions to our effort for over a year now, with goodies just showing up on our doorstep all the time. Last month, 48 more boxes of Girl Scout cookies appeared, along with some other items. Mrs Tommie McClain does the leg work for the clinic, dropping those items off to us periodically. Dr Martin Keadle, his staff, and of course their clients are all to thank for spreading the word and supporting our troops!
  • On Sunday, August 14, Copperfield Bowl hosted their annual Mid-Summer No Tap bowling tournament and Cypress Cares was the beneficiary of the proceeds from that event. Our thanks to Mr. Mike Nelson and his staff for again thinking of Cypress Cares, and making a contribution of $500 to our effort. CC volunteers Raquel and Larry Cunningham, Alicia and Greg Powell, Donna and Dean McCarty, Steve Squyres and Kathi Nunez all showed up and participated in the event, and had a great time doing so. We were certainly not in the running to win, just there to have some fun. We're even thinking of having a Cypress Cares Fun Night at Copperfield Bowl just to get together and enjoy some time out. Are you game?

A Walk for Remembrance will be held on Sunday, September 11 at 7:30 in the morning in the Cole's Crossing subdivision. We invite those who support our efforts and the efforts of hundreds of other organizations around the country, to take a moment to reflect upon the tragedy of 9/11 and all that has occurred since. If you are able to join us in Cypress, we welcome you to do so. For those who live far from here, we encourage you to organize your own tribute for that morning to help us show the world that WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN!   See EDITORIAL below from TRWB's Gary Bartels for his thoughts as well.

Link your Kroger and Randall's Cards!

You know those cards you carry for Kroger and Randall's grocery stores? Well if you "link" your card to Cypress Cares, we will benefit by receiving a check from each store to help support our cause.  Visit our website's home page for more information and be sure to ask your friends and family to link theirs as well. It may not amount to much in terms of money, but it means a lot to the service member who gets to smile at mail call!

Volunteer Corner

We'd like to shine a little spotlight on another volunteer here at Cypress Cares.

This month we feature Mrs. Heather Faircloth. Heather set up the Spirit Night fundraiser for Cypress Cares with the Chick-Fil-A location in Tomball. This event was originally scheduled for earlier in 2011, but the sudden freeze we had forced a cancellation.  Heather stuck with it and got us re-scheduled for October! Thank you Heather for your persistance and your support.

We are blessed to have you helping us out!

the reason we serve
 ...feedback from the battlefield

Feedback from the Frontlines,

Dear Cypress Cares,

I am in Afghan with HMLA-267 (Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron). We have been out here since early May and only have a few months left. We are the key factor of Air Support for the guys on the ground doing what no one else wants to. We operate 24 HRS a day at an extremely high tempo. All the heat and hard work is worth it when we get packages out here from Americans that appreciate what we do. We all are very thankful when people back home spend their own time to do something to say thanks. Ya'lls support reminds us why we do what we do.

Dear Cypress Cares Team,

Somehow, six of your care packages were given to my unit which just arrived here a month ago and on behalf of the soldiers and command team of the 1297th CSSB from Maryland, we thank you for your support and the kind donations that unexpectedly arrived at our doorstep. We will take these items and every time a convoy goes out on a dangerous mission our team is there to pray with the soldiers, bless the vehicles and to offer them comfort from home. We will also mention your kindness in our next UMT newsletter.

EDITORIAL

As we near the 10 year anniversary of the terror attacks at the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, I urge folks to not forget about those innocent lives lost that day.  In your own way, please honor their sacrifice and the families they left behind.  At the click of a button, you can find all sorts of events that are being driven by all sorts of organizations that aim to do just that:  come together to honor and remember the victims of 9-11.

In our everyday lives, we see local non-profit organizations that are organized and operated by ordinary folks that have taken time out of their lives in order to improve the quality of lives for others, specifically our currents service members and our wounded veterans.  Obviously, one of the most prevalent and most successful non-profits in our local area that does just that is Cypress Cares.  Raquel Cunningham and her team are doing wonderful things for wonderful people serving in hostile areas in the form of care packages, and their passion and commitment should be motivation for everyone to lend a hand in any way possible.  Another wonderful organization that helps our veterans is the Lone Star Veterans Association (Lone Star Veterans Association) .  Brian Wilson and his group have taken it to the next level in their efforts to serve the OIF/OEF and GWOT Veterans of the Greater Houston area.  They provide job assistance, education benefits help, social events, peer to peer mentoring, and community service.  Another group is the group that I myself lead here in Texas called Team Red, White & Blue Texas (Team RWB Texas) that specifically focuses on a one-on-one relationship between an Advocate and a local Wounded Veteran.  The bonds and relationships being built and maintained through simple tasks such as grocery shopping, church visits and family gatherings are second to none in that they help the Wounded Veteran with a source of trust and friendship.

I tell you about these three wonderful organizations to bring you back to my original point of remembering the day and the folks lost on 9-11.  These three military focused non-profit organizations will be taking part in specific events on 9-11 with the overall goal not being to muster support for their own cause and their own benefit, but to give folks an outlet in which to be part of a day or remembrance and tribute.  Some of their members will be joining larger, more organized events like those being organized by Team RWB at 9/11 Memorial "Moving Tribute" or by the Travis Manion Foundation  at  9/11 Heroes Run .  At the end of the day, the ultimate goal is to simply pause...reflect...remember...  If you cannot make it out to support one of these three wonderful groups in their efforts to do just that, do it in your own way in your own neighborhood.  Get a group of neighbors together, remove the flag from your driveway and run around your subdivision.  Toss on a Stars and Stripes bandana, your Camelbak with a couple small US flags stuck in the webbing, and run a few miles down a busy route of travel...I bet you get a few honks along the way.  Turn on the television, watch a 9-11 tribute on one of the many channels showing them, and explain to your child who was not yet born in 2001 what this day is about and what it means to remember.  Whatever you choose to do, please remember to do it safely and respectfully to ensure total success and complete reverence.  The only wrong thing you can do is to do nothing.

Thanks, and good luck !

Gary Bartels, Jr.
