February 2011

Here is your February Newsletter from Cypress Cares! We've got a short newsletter for a short month this time. Just a few things to keep you in the loop on what is going on with Cypress Cares.

There are two exciting areas of support from of our members that is notable.

  • One of our supporters, Morgan Marshall is a Girl Scout working on her Silver Award project. Morgan chose to earn her Silver Award by gathering enough cash and in-kind donations for 22 packages for the Soldiers. She plans to continue her project by involving students from her high school as well. Thank you Morgan for wanting to earn your award by helping our troops!
  • Another group of our supporters, ladies of a local Cypress book club save up extra coins and deposit them into a jar and hold a drawing to decide which organization to send the money to. Kristin Butchko put Cypress Cares' name into the drawing and our name was chosen as the recipient of $116.

Also, keep the following date on your calendar!

  • May 15 is our third annual golf tournament at Longwood Golf Club. We are still seeking sponsorships for the event and are ready to sign golfers up to play. Teams are encouraged to sign up at info@cypress-cares.org. In addition to seeking sponsors for the tournament, we are also asking people to sponsor a Veteran to play in the event as well. We hope to set up six teams of 4 veterans each. This would be a great way to say "thank you" to those who have served for us all!  Anyone seeking information on other sponsorships or if you are interested in playing as well, please contact us at info@Cypress-Cares.org.

Cy Woods High School Band and Band Boosters will be doing a donation drive this spring to collect items for the packages, led by Mrs. Amy Eagan.

We hope to have lots more news for you in our March newsletter. Thanks for your continued support! Have a fantastic February.

Girl Scout Cookie Time!

This year Cypress Cares will again be shipping a lot of Girl Scout cookies to our troops. We will attempt to recognize the individuals and scout troops that donate cookies to our effort, but we ask that if you drop them off at our office (in Cole's Crossing subdivision) that you leave a note on them to let us know where they came from. We want to acknowlege all of the donations in our newsletter, but we don't always have individual's or business' names, or the number of the Girl Scout troop that donated.

Thank you to all who have comitted to giving cookies to our troops again this year. We hope to have all cookies in the mail by the beginning of April! And YES, we will ship chocolate cookies as long as we have them by mid-March, otherwise, we will have to store them until the weather turns cold again in the Fall.

Volunteer Corner

This month we'd like to shine a little spotlight on another volunteer here at Cypress Cares, Mark and SueZahn Lucas.  The Lucas' have been working with Cypress Cares since our Golf Tournament in 2011 and we are thrilled to have them on our team. The parents of a US Marine, they really take the Cypress Cares mission to heart.  With Mark recently retired from his job in the petroleum industry, we're wondering if we'll see more of him as we start planning this year's golf tournament!

SueZahn and Mark, thank you so much for becoming part of the Cypress Cares Team! We are blessed to have you helping us out!

Looking for a few Guest Speakers for 2011

Do you know of someone who would be interested in speaking to our volunteers prior to a box packing event for 2011?  We think that it goes a long way to help inspire the children who work with us and motivate the entire team when someone stops in to say a few words of encouragement or thanks to Cypress Cares volunteers.  We've got a few ideas in mind, but are always looking for ideas. If you know someone who might be willing to talk for 10-15 minutes at one of our events next year, please have them contact us!
The reason we serve
 ...feedback from the battlefield

Mrs. Robbins, Cypress Cares and students and staff at Lieder Elementary School. What a blessing your packages were to me and the Soldiers of the 36th Infantry Division. We receive many packages, but none that were wrapped like yours.  It was the closest we've come since arriving here to feeling like we were back home at Christmas opening presents. Thank you so much for the consideration and the joy that you gave us.

*******

Dear Cypress Cares,

Thank you so much for all the care packages that you all sent me while I have been deployed overseas. Your care is the reason why we keep going over here. I just want to thank you for taking the time to mail me while I've been away from home. You all have made my deployment better ever since I received your first package. Thank you again! Continue to do what you do, because us over here are always appreciative of the packages that we get!

Something Special
One of the US Army personnel on our mailing list is LT Laura Childs of Katy, TX. Her mom, Charlene, sent us a link to a clip from CNN last week. In this clip is Laura's daughter Ashley, giving a shout out to her mom in Afghanistan. Ashley got to appear on CNN's Headline News to give her shout out from the studio.
We just thought we'd share this clip with everyone. Ashley, you did a great job! Your mom will be so proud and we can't wait until you see her again!

Editorial: A Perspective from an Army Mom

transition: 1: a passage from one state, stage, subject, or place to another.

Perhaps this best describes what it is like to have a loved one serving in the military.  My son joined the United States Army in October of 2009 and my family has been in what seems like a constant state of transition since then.  We have made the transition, just like other families, from having a dependent young man to a very independent one. We have made the transition, as a family, of having him around all the time to hardly talking to him at all because he is half way around the world. The transition in state of mind and in my way of thinking; when he enlisted being apprehensive and scared, and transitioning to  now being so very proud of the man, the soldier, he has become. The transition of being a school volunteer for his activities to volunteering with Cypress Cares to help take care of not only him, but so many of our military men and women who need it. My youngest son has made the transition to being the only son, out of 3, still at home. So much transition left to experience. His change in duty station, a possible change of rank and MOS. The changes are endless and we have come to understand how frustrating and yet wonderfully elating it can all be.  It takes a strong individual, in mind and body, to be a soldier. Strong he is, so strong we remain, strong in spirit, mind, body as we ride out each new transition with him.

cope: 1obs: strike, fight; 2a: to maintain a contest or combat usually on even terms or with success;  2b: to deal with and attempt to overcome problems and difficulties;

Funny, isn't it, that the definition of this word can apply to the soldier's daily duties, but also to the soldier's family, or even to our nation? We all cope with many things every day, but coping with having a loved one in the military can be a full time job at times. My youngest son copes with the fear of his brother being in harm's way. My family and I cope, and the pride we have in our soldier is very instrumental in helping with that. Cypress Cares has also been a help in coping.  I learn, I make a difference, I become friends with other's who experience the same set of emotions as I do. There are countless other military families that cope too, we all have that in common. And so we find comfort in each other, and in the difference we can make through Cypress Cares.

As military families around the world transition and cope every day, amid our enormous pride and joy in those we love that have chosen bravery, freedom, patriotism, and self sacrifice, we also find ourselves in a place that is unique and special.  We are set apart by not only our roller coaster of emotions but also the role we play in support, love of a soldier and sacrifice.  Unique, special, support, love of a soldier, sacrifice....all words I don't need to define to anyone reading this, because we live it every day. God Bless Cypress Cares for not only stepping up and making a difference for so many soldiers, but also helping families of those soldiers transition and cope as we help to make that difference. God Bless our brave patriots and all that they stand and sacrifice for! HOOAH!
