January 2011

Happy New Year! We hope this year is off to a fantastic start for each of you. Ours is, because we just counted our totals: in 2010, our goal of 1,500 package and shipped  was met and then some as our total number of packages for the year came to 1,683!

We exceeded our goal thanks to you, our fantastic volunteers, with the help of great contributions in the past month:

  • MOMS at The Met, students from Labay Middle School and the GS Troop 17146 contributed letters and holiday cards for our packages.
  • The staff of Lieder Elementary School in CFISD packaged 53 boxes for our December shipment.
  • Daisy Troop #15315, lead by Scarlett Poreda, filled packages for the troops to help the girls earn their service patch this month. (get photo from Rhonda!)
  • Students from The Wolf School in Rhodes Island collected items and mailed them to Cypress Cares for inclusion in our packages!
  • Boy Scout troop 655, the St. Timothy Charter near Jersey Village, filled and shipped 10 packages.
  • Third grade brownie scout troop #15284 made some crafts for us to put into our packages. This project was spearheaded by troop leader, Carrie Carlson.
  • Magnolia Cub Scout Pack 1178 filled a few boxes and shipped them to troops themselves. They had a couple of their packages mailed to service members from the CC list!
  • The Interact Club of Williamsville South High School in Williamsville, NY made Christmas cards for our troop packages. Thank you Debbie Lund and Patti Shoemaker, Interact Advisors, for your support.
  • Shawna Heflin and the Barry's pizza staff organized a successful pizza eating contest in October to fund packages filled by customers in November. This was a successful event!
  • The final 2010 box packing event in December was fantastic: 80 boxes for Iraq and Afghanistan, 50 volunteers (including a group of students from Cy Ranch HS Key Club) two very special guests, Santa and Mrs. Clause! Thank you to Real Santa Jim (Fletcher) for coming out!  Santa Jim's support comes from personal experience as the father of an Army veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom who is the recipient of a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. The kids were thrilled to have Santa fill packages by their side!

We have one resolution for 2011: ship 1,800 packages to the troops. Check out our events page and join us for an upcoming event close to you!

Special request: In March, we need 25 Cypress Cares volunteers to help out at the Warrior Dash in Conroe. We will get $1,000 donation for every 25 volunteers that sign up. There are four shifts to work the entire weekend. If you are interested in working one or more shifts, please contact Melissa at butterfly.girl@att.net  and she will put you on the list to help out and get you the details. There is $4,500 available for us if we get the volunteers to work the full weekend, and that would be a great boost for us in 2011!

Support those who support us!

Are you in need of storage? Big Star Storage at 14820 Cypress-North Houston is owned and operated by Steve (a retired US Army Chief Warrant Officer) and Jennifer Schrieken.

Behind their access code-controlled gate, Big Star offers 305 storage units, including some that are climated controlled and storage for your boat or RV too! They also rent U-Haul trucks, trailers and vans, and sell moving boxes and supplies as well.

Big Star has very generously given Cypress Cares a big break on the cost of a storage unit for all of our supplies. We thank you Steve/Big Star Storage for your support of our troops and of Cypress Cares!

Volunteer Corner

This month we'd like to shine a little spotlight on another volunteer here at Cypress Cares, Lisa and Mark Copeland.  The Copeland's have been working with Cypress Cares for more than a year now and have become a team we can really count on to help out.  Lisa has taken charge of the box-taping table at our packing events and Mark is part of our muscle team that takes all of the boxes out and loads them on our trucks. It's great for us to have folks that can take charge like Mark and Lisa do!

Mark and Lisa, thank you so much for becoming part of the Cypress Cares Team! We are blessed to have you helping us out!

Cypress Cares 2nd Annual Golf Tournament

golf ball

Our first tournament last year netted Cypress Cares enough funds to pay for the majority of 2010's shipping expenses, and we only hope to improve on that this year.  With your help, we will not only be able to pay for our 2011 shipping expenses, but also be able to purchase some items to help augment the donations for our care packages.

Our first official planning meeting for the 2011 tournament will be held on January 13 at 6:30pm at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church. If you would like to volunteer on this committee, please let us know by sending an email to info@Cypress-Cares.org.  We will greatly appreciate any help you can offer!

If you know of a business or individual who may be willing to help sponsor our golf tournament, please send their contact information to Raquel at Raquel@Cypress-Cares.org.

Looking for a few Guest Speakers for 2011

Do you know of someone who would be interested in speaking to our volunteers prior to a box packing event for 2011?  We think that it goes a long way to help inspire the children who work with us and motivate the entire team when someone stops in to say a few words of encouragement or thanks to Cypress Cares volunteers.  We've got a few ideas in mind, but are always looking for ideas. If you know someone who might be willing to talk for 10-15 minutes at one of our events next year, please have them contact us!
The reason we serve
 ...feedback from the battlefield

Dear Cypress Cares,

Thanks so much for the Christmas trees! They really help to make the fact that we are away from home during the holidays much more bearable!

Happy Holidays, LT Cadle

*******

On behalf of grateful service members, we appreciate your thoughts and Christmas care package. It arrived at a HQ command but is being forwarded to an area experiencing heavy fighting. I assure you that the US Marines down there will welcome your gifts whole-heartedly.

Very Respectfully, LTC McCarty, US Navy
