Kessler Vital Issues Forum
Civil Rights in Times of CrisisLauren Kessler
We go blithely about our lives, assuming no one will incarcerate us just because we're blonde, 65+, or exhibiting some other easily identifiable trait.  As Lauren Kessler notes in her book Stubborn Twig, such was not the case for Japanese-Americans in World War II.  And perhaps the lesson has been forgotten, as other ethnic groups may be targeted in this time of heightened concerns about security.

In a Vital Issues Forum to be held Sunday, March 7 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm, Kessler discusses the internment of Japanese-Americans as illustrated by the true story of a multi-generation family residing in the Hood River area of Oregon. Kessler's book was selected as the book that all Oregonians should read in honor of the state's sesquicentennial.  Not only is the topic timely, but Kessler is an entertaining lecturer, having appeared twice on the David Letterman show. A panel discussion, Q & A and booksiging will follow the lecture.  Admission is free, but tickets are required.  These shouldl be available next week.  In the meantime, the OLLI office will take reservations for you and your guests.  Seats in the venue where the lecture will occur, the Arena Room of the SOU Stevenson Union, are limited to 275.

Winter Course Proposals Due 1/22
OLLI Instructor Stretch Yourself
Courses are the lifeblood of OLLI.  Many of those who have taught a course have found the process of preparing an interesting curriculum and then presenting the material to one's peers to be one of the most rewarding aspects of membership.  The Curriculum Committee would be happy to help you fine-tune a proposal, due January 22.  If you yourself can't or don't want to teach this spring, think about encouraging talented OLLI members or friends in the community to consider doing so.  We are especially eager to bolster the offerings on the Medford campus.

Class Cancellation Information
Winters in Southern Oregon can be beautiful, but sometimes weather can lead to a shutdown at one or both of our host campuses.  When this occurs, OLLI classes at that site will also be canceled.  If the weather appears threatening, a better option than having all 1,200 members call the office to check whether OLLI classes will be held that day is to consult the SOU website, www.sou.edu, which will indicate closures for the Ashland and/or Medford campuses.
