Winter Reminders

Winter is upon us and, as expected in Michigan, icy and snowy roads are a hazard.  Please take the time to arrive at your destination safely.  Here are a few of the common causes of accidents on snowy/icy roadways:

  • Speed too fast.  Allow extra time to get to work or other destinations.
  • Tailgating.  There's a reason the person in front of you is going slow.  Don't question it or try to "push" them along.
  • Inadequate stopping distance for stop signs or entrances to the roadway.  Slow down gradually.  Allow greater stopping distance between your vehicle and the intersection to avoid "sliding through" and causing a collision.
  • Misjudgment of the road surface.  We've all heard of black ice or been surprised when a road is much more slippery than anticipated.  Remember that bridges are usually most icy because of the cold air underneath.

Wishing you all a safe season,

Deputy Sara Fillman

More information

Residential Knox BoxFire Department Knox Boxes

The Spring Lake Fire Department is promoting the use of a Residential Knox Box, especially for those who live alone or who may have mobility issues. A Knox Box is a secure, locked box which is mounted on the house and contains a key to the residence. Only the Spring Lake Fire Department has the highly secure master key for the Knox Boxes of Spring Lake residents. If a resident is unable to open the door for the Fire Department, a forcible entry may be needed. Having a Knox Box with a key allows for rapid, damage-free entry of a residence.

The Spring Lake Fire Department has teamed up with the North Ottawa County Council on Aging to provide funding for low income older adults to have a life-saving, damage-preventing Knox Box installed at their home. NOCCOA can be reached at 616.842.9210 for more information.

For more information about Knox Boxes, please contact the Fire Department at 616.844.0491 and they will be happy to assist you.

 Best Wishes,

Gordon Gallagher
