Safe Routes to School Day
Spring Lake Schools and the Village of Spring Lake are participating in Walk-&-Roll-to-School Day on Wednesday, May 19. Parents and community members will walk and bicycle to school with students to experience the fun of walking and bicycling along the routes children could use every day.
Help reduce air pollution and traffic jams around schools and join the fun!

Gypsy Moth Spraying
Spraying for gypsy moth control will occur in portions of the Township in late May or early June. A biological insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) will be used. Bt only affects caterpillars of moths and butterflies that are actively feeding at the time of the treatment. It is a natural pesticide which is used on organic fruits and vegetables up to the day of harvest. Fixed wing aircraft will apply 1/3 gallon of the Bt material over each acre. In most cases, wind and temperature constraints will limit spraying to morning, but if conditions allow spraying will continue until completed or until conditions will no longer allow for an effective application. Spraying will occur on Strawberry Point, along State Road to the east side of Country Estates Mobile Home Park, and from State Road north along the west side of 148th Avenue to Farmwood Court. Properties in the affected areas have received a letter indicating they are in or near the proposed treatment area. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this program, please contact Lizzie Sperry at 616-477-6573. |
Bike Path Cleanup
Thank you to everyone who came out to the Bike Path Clean Up Event in April! It was a tremendous success. Over 230 people participated to clean up the ENTIRE SPRING LAKE BIKE PATH SYSTEM, as well as Central Park, Mill Point Park, and Rycenga Park! The Honors choirs from Holmes and Jeffers did a fantastic job with an Earth Day Song performance as well. Nearly 60 Gallon-Sized Blue Spruce were donated by an area nursery (prefers anonymity) for select lucky families to take home and plant as well. Spring Lake Township generously donated supplies, maps, and picked up all the garbage along path.
Special thanks to everyone who helped organize this event - Melissa Balavitch, Mary Amy Bajt, Jen Gable and Christine Clover. |
Sewer Backup Information
Upon discovery of an overflow or sewer backup, immediately contact the Water and Sewer Department at 616-842-0080 weekdays between the hours of 8am-5pm. After business hours, during weekends, and on holidays, this same number will be answered by automated equipment and your call will be forwarded to on-call personnel. Please follow the prompts, speak clearly and leave a call-back number.
Sewage backups and overflows are often the result of grease buildup, which can lead to costly clean-ups and repairs, as well as health concerns. Disposing of cooking oils and grease properly in your home can help to prevent clogged pipes and grease-related backups in the future. Remember that grease blockages can cause wastewater to overflow inside your own home and damage private property, so do your part and keep grease out of the drains! Other major causes of clogging at pumping stations are disposable diapers, personal hygiene items and paper products such as baby wipes and paper cleaning cloths. The only paper product that belongs in the sewer system is toilet tissue.
