Spring Lake Township to receive
$1.2 Million EDA Grant

SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP, MI: The U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded Spring Lake Township a grant for $1.2 million to upgrade nine of the township's wastewater pumping stations.

"Pumping stations are vital to keeping Michigan families safe by preventing wastewater spills in our communities. They are the backbone of Spring Lake Township's water system and that is why I am pleased to announce this grant, as it will provide this community with much-needed infrastructure upgrades." - Senator Debbie Stabenow

"Reliable infrastructure is a major key to economic growth in communities," said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland. "Spring Lake Township will surely benefit from the long-overdue upgrade by improving its economic environment, which will hopefully attract business investment and job creation over the long term."

John Stuparits, Manager of the Grand Haven, Spring Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant added, "Improving pump station reliability will also help safe guard our natural resources.   Upgrading aging infrastructure, especially wastewater collection, is an important component of protecting one of our most valued assets..... water".

The wastewater collection system was built in 1981/82. Most of the pumps, motors and control systems in the pumping stations have reached their design life. Some have been rebuilt and many are in need of repair and/or replacement. Several of the pump stations require the installation of stand-by generators, to prevent wastewater spills when the lift stations lose power. Replacement with new pumps, motors, and valves and in some cases generators will improve reliability and improve the capacity of the pump stations.
Spring Lake Township and Northwest Ottawa County will be well positioned to take advantage of an improving economic climate. The wastewater lift station upgrade project will allow Spring Lake Township to provide more reliable wastewater service to existing industry, and additional reliable capacity to allow new industry to connect to the system. Spring Lake Township continues to make the retention of current jobs and the creation of new jobs a very high priority.

By improving the reliability of the wastewater lift stations, Spring Lake Township will also enhance industry region-wide. Improved reliability of the lift stations in Spring Lake Township will encourage industries to locate in the area. However, as wastewater treatment is handled regionally, improving the reliability of one area of the system will improve the reliability of the system as a whole. That will encourage industrial development throughout the 5-community wastewater treatment collection area.
