President's Welcome
Dear Friends and Members of the Harvard Club of France,
Summer is here in Paris, and also looming in Cambridge - just on time for those who were lucky enough to attend Commencement, which this year took place on May 24th. To our greatest pleasure, some of us were able to watch it online. Let me congratulate all our members/potential members who just graduated on campus, including the extraordinary Alexandra Goujon and Audrey Philippot who have done a superb job representing the Club in Cambridge for the past two years. A new team is already set to take over and we will give them the opportunity to introduce themselves in September.
The flow between the two sides of the Atlantic is permanent: In the next few weeks, around 30 Harvard students will be in Paris for various activities, internships, etc... The Center for European Studies and the Harvard Club of France are cooperating to make their French stay a unique experience. Welcome to Paris ! We look forward to seeing you, as well as our regular members, at our next events including the polo match in Chantilly this week-end, the (obviously) special summer students picnic on June 7th, the Harvard-Yale traditional summer party on June 19th and -last but not least- the Dins and Tonics performance at the Travellers' on June 25th. The Executive Committee urges members to connect with these students in the summer months - let us know of any proposals for economical activities. Moreover, we hope even more members will be inspired to offer an internship in 2013 as our summer visitors are a brilliant bunch providing excellent service to their host organizations.
Since the academic year is coming to an end, let me say again that the HCF is looking forward to receiving new members from the summer onwards. There will be plenty of activities in the Fall and Winter, and many occasions to mingle with existing members. The Club relies almost exclusively on its members' annual dues for its finances and I would like to remind everyone to renew their membership accordingly whenever they can. Any suggestion for additional contribution/donation is always welcome, as we are constanly looking at improving our program of activities and events.
Last, let me say that we will start recruiting volunteers to support the Executive committee. A number of positions are available, and I would love to hear from potential candidates. Feel free to drop me a line at president@harvardclub.fr if you are interested in helping your club in organizing events, hosting parties, suggesting guest-speakers, etc..
Warm regards,
Philippe

Harvard - SciencesPo Polo Match
| |
Looking for something fun and new to do this glorious upcoming weekend? Don your big fancy hat or brush off your 'bucks and head on out to Chantilly for some Polo my dear Ladies and Gents.
This Saturday, June 2nd, the Harvard Polo Team will for the second time meet a team of alumni of French Grandes Ecoles in a test match to be held at the Polo Club de Chantilly, ahead of Harvard's planned confrontation with Oxford and Cambridge in June.
The Harvard Polo Club builds on a tradition of polo dating back to the early 20th century. The team, reestablished in 2006, currently has 18 members and practices regularly in Hamilton, Massachusetts.
The event will take place in the superb surroundings of the Domaine de Chantilly which will also feature on the same date 12-goals polo matches (highest level played in France in the spring).
Players will play in aid of the Harvard Therapeutic Riding Initiative which helps children with mental or physical disabilities overcome their difficulties by promoting contacts with horses.
Join us for this exciting event.

Help Harvard Identify Leaders Who Want to Impact the World
| |
For those of you who know someone questioning how best to make a difference after his or her primary income-earning years, leading faculty members from across several of Harvard's professional schools (Business, Education, Kennedy, Law and Public Health), have created a path-breaking innovation in higher education--the Advanced Leadership Initiative.
Harvard's Advanced Leadership Initiative (ALI) seeks to find and deploy leaders who want to focus their next years of service on addressing societal challenges such as education, public health, peace, economic development, or other ways to make a difference. The program is now identifying its fifth cohort of Advanced Leadership Fellows, and we seek your assistance in helping us identify exceptional candidates from across the globe. Attached please find our 2013 brochure so you may become more familiar with our program and our faculty.
ALI is now conversing with candidates for the 2013 Advanced Leadership program and we ask for your assistance. If you know other experienced leaders who might be looking for the opportunity to reengage with the University in preparation for their next career as social innovators, please share this information with them.
This year, we welcomed 28 Advanced Leadership Fellows, drawn from 11 countries and almost every profession. Several Harvard alumni are in this year's program. Post-fellowship, ALI's leaders have addressed issues as diverse as helping make college education affordable, improving the quality of patient care, and delivering effective energy solutions to developing nations. These alumni are now part of a vibrant, global network of like-minded peers who continue to engage with the Harvard community as they collaborate on changing the world.
If interested in learning more about our fellowship, please "Introduce Yourself" to ALI-and attach a current CV or biography. I also welcome the opportunity to answer your questions, so please contact me at john_kendzior@harvard.edu or call directly +1 617 496 2452.
Thank you for helping us identify a new force of global leaders who seek to transform society.
Best,
John Kendzior

From our friends at Columbia

The Columbia Club of France is proud to invite you to join them for a panel discussion and networking event, "Rio +20: Where to from here", a very special discussion to take place Thursday on June 7.
"We celebrate this year the 20th anniversary of the first Rio conference, also known as the Earth Summit. In mid-June, Brazil will host Rio+20 to take stock of past achievements, but most importantly, to outline future challenges and responsibilities for businesses and governments alike.
"We are very proud to have secured the participation of three exceptional speakers to discuss the impact of the "sustainability revolution" on business and financial markets and help us to understand the stakes of Rio+20:
* Laurence Tubiana, founder of the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI)
* Claude Nahon, Executive Vice President for Sustainable Development at EDF Group
* Eric Borremans, Head of CSR & Socially Responsible Investment Development at BNP Paribas Investment Partners
Space is limited, so we recommend you register early to secure a spot.

Coordinator's Corner

Once again, I am looking forward to June's annual party at a prestigious venue on June 19. I'd like to echo Philippe's appeal for people who are interested in getting involved with their Alma Mater via the HCF. Working with the Executive Committee, I see the dynamism, intelligence and motivation that Harvard graduates are known for. It's a pleasure to work alongside them. All articles, unless otherwise noted, are written by yours truly. As always, I hope you enjoyed this newsletter. Please send us any comments. I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event, Courtney Pulitzer, Club Coordinator
