President's Welcome
Dear Friends and Fellow HCF Members, I have no doubt you have been missing our colorful (in all respects!) newsletter, which serves as a wonderful link between all of us. Courtney Pulitzer, our aptly named Club Coordinator, is the founder/editor of this publication, and she is always willing to accept contributions you may have for the next editions. More good news : Courtney's contract has been unanimously renewed by the HCF Executive Committee, which means we will be able to use her technical/social/administrative/journalistic skills for much longer. Courtney is always happy to hear from our members, so do not hesitate to reach out to her. Regarding our Club activities, we are contributing to a very political year 2012 (on both sides of the Atlantic) by hosting a number of Harvard personalities with strong political and economic views: Prof. Joseph Nye came to Paris in January to help us launch the HCF's Kennedy School Chapter; Prof. Lawrence Summers came in February to address our Harvard-ADI Dialogue program; and on April 5th, one of Harvard's foremost economists (and François Hollande economic adviser) Prof. Philippe Aghion, will be talking to us on "Growth strategies in France and Europe : the Monti triangle". We are looking forward to hearing from him. New talents on the HCF Executive Committee include: Marianne Najafi (HKS), Stephanie Ng (PhD Candidate + our Arts & Culture in-house specialist) and Olivier Herbez (GSD). All of them have been contributing their expertise to our program of activities, and I thank them for their help. This club is your club, and we always look forward to receiving your proposals/ideas/suggestions on the program. In times of full interactivity, this is the only way to go. And finally, let me say how delighted and proud I am to announce that IMF Director General Christine Lagarde will be the Keynote speaker at the Harvard Kennedy School Commencement. Congratulations to our HCF on campus Representative Alexandra Goujon, active in securing this invitation, who has done a great job over the past year! I look forward to seeing you soon at our events. Warm regards, Philippe Philippe Le Corre - President of the Harvard Club of France France Amériques 9, Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, Paris Web: http://www.harvardclub.fr/ |
Harvard Kennedy School - French Chapter
| |
On January 18th, the Club hosted an important event : the official launch of the Kennedy School French chapter, in the presence of Prof Joseph Nye, inventor of "soft power" and without a doubt one of Harvard's best-known celebrity professors. The New York Times' Serge Schmemann interviewed Nye and a video is to be released on the IHT website.
In addition to HKS and other HCF members, the crowd included diplomats, French politicians, former ministers and journalists. All this happened thanks to the formidable HKS coordinator Benoit Rossi who masterminded this launch for almost a year. It was also greatly helped by our partnership with the Academie Diplomatique Internationale - for which we must thank once again our friend Tim Ryback, ADI's Deputy Secretary General and HCF Honorary Board member. Tim has been one of our strongest supports for the past few years and we are lucky to have him. We have decided to call this series "Harvard Dialogues". Pictures Here! |
Harvard Dialogues

On March 9th 2012, the HKS Chapter co-sponsored a breakfast talk with Prof. Larry Summers, who is currently teaching economics at the Kennedy School, after having served as President Obama's chief economist for two years, before which he presided Harvard University 2001-2006. Dr. Summers delivered a brilliant address to a full house during which he stressed the need for Europeans to re-think its economic policies. "You can't really claim there's a viable growth model for Europe," he noted. More than 170 guests attended this major event which took place at the Académie Diplomatique Internationale in partnership with the New York Times. Pictures Here!

Harvard Women France
| |
Harvard Women France and Harvard Business School Club de France were honored to host a lunch with Karen Kornbluh on March 5th, 2012 at the Cercle Interallie.
Ms. Kornbluh is US Ambassador to OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). She served notably as Policy Director for then-Senator Barack Obama from 2005 to 2008 and authored the 2008 party platform. Previously, she held high positions at the U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Communications Commission and was economic policy advisor to Senator John Kerry. Her influence obviously spreads far and the women present at this luncheon took advantage of the opportunity to meet with her, pose questions and mingle afterwards for some power networking. |
Speaker Series: Arts and Culture
| |

"The Expatriate Moment in Paris" talk by Professor Sue Weaver Schopf was delivered on March 14th to a standing-room only crowd of HCF, France Amériques, Stanford, and Columbia members, along with a contingent of adult Harvard Extension School students who had travelled with Prof. Schopf to experience the neighborhoods, cafés, and parks where American expat artists "hung together" entre deux guerres.
Prof Schopf (a personal friend of this event's coordinator - Exec Committee member Stephanie Ng) is a brilliant master of her subject. With pictures and prose she really made us understand the social, cultural and technological context in which the "lost generation" brought innovations to art and literature. If you missed it, here are the pictures. After this resounding success the HCF plans to facilitate online learning with Prof. Schopf - watch this space!

Arts and Culture: The Harvard Din & Tonics
| |

Let's welcome the Dins back to Paris!
For the first time in twelve years, the Din and Tonics wil stop in Paris on their summer world tour on June 24-26. Harvard University's signature all-male a cappella singing group, the Dins are known around the world for their rich tradition of musical and performance excellence. With a repertoire centered on the American jazz standards of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, these Harvard gentlemen- who perform in white tie, tails, and lime green socks- have an enviable reputation for their impeccable musicality, snappy choreography, and hilarious antics.
The Dins are looking for places to stay during their stay here. If you would like to host a Din or even hire them for an event, please send an email
to: alexandre@post.harvard.edu. More info: http://dins.com/

Harvard Club of France - On Campus: by Alexandra Goujon

France all over Cambridge!
We are pleased to announce the Harvard Kennedy School 2012 Commencement Speaker will be our very own CHRISTINE LAGARDE! We are very proud she accepted our invitation and there is no better way to end this amazing year of French representation on campus!
The past few months have been very intense for the "Harvard Club of France on Campus" with several renowned French speakers coming to speak about a variety of exciting topics.
First we had the visit of our Club President PHILIPPE LE CORRE who met with all students in February for a Galette des Rois and talked about the projects of the Harvard Club of France and the opportunities for the students graduating this year.
After Valérie Pécresse last year, we also had the visit of another Minister, EDOUARD COURTIAL, Secretary of State for French Nationals Abroad who participated in a breakfast with the Consul, Harvard students and professionals from the Boston area.
Then the French Ambassador to the US, FRANÇOIS DELATTRE, came to the Center of European Studies for a conference on "France in the world: Contemporary Foreign Policy Challenges" followed by a reception with the students.
JEAN-CLAUDE TRICHET, former president of the European Central Bank, gave the Malcolm Wiener Lecture in International Political Economy at the Kennedy School, an event moderated by Harvard University President Emeritus Lawrence Summers. Mr. Trichet focused his talk on the economic recessions, particularly in Europe, and analyzed the strategies and approaches to fixing the economic crisis.
The list does not stop there and we were lucky to also have:
- NICOLAS TENZER, Co-founder and Chairman of Initiative for the Development of French Expertise Abroad in Europe and Worldwide, former adviser to the Cabinet office of the Minister of Finance (1987-88), Head of Department of Evaluation and State Modernization, and Senior Adviser to the Strategic Planning Commission (1994-2003), on "The World in 2030: Primary Trends and Challenges"
- THOMAS PIKETTY, French Economist, on "Inequality and Capitalism in the long run"
- JEAN-PIERRE FILIU, French specialist of Islam and Middle East, Professor at Science Po, and author of a book « The Arab Revolution, ten lessons from the democratic uprising », in a seminar at the Center for European Studies about "European Revolutions, Arab Spring and Mediterranean Future".
- ARNAUD DANJEAN, French Member of the European Parliament on « International Security Challenges: The relevance of Europe in a rapidly changing world »
- EVARISTE LEFEUVRE, Chief Economist at Natixis North America, on "Debt Crises and Growth: the New Challenges facing Europe and the United States".
All in all an amazing year for the French community on campus. For those who may be in the area on May 23d, come to the HKS Commencement Ceremony to hear our great speaker--the whole campus envies us! Details to come.
