Philippe Le CorrePresident's Welcome

Dear Friends and Fellow HCF Members,

On October 12th, at the last Annual General Assembly, a new Executive Committee was elected for your club and you have been kind enough to re-elect me as president for another year. Let me say that I feel honored and privileged to be here, surrounded by a refreshed and energetic Committee now representing most schools of our alma mater : Harvard College of course, but also the Harvard Law School, the Harvard Business School, the Harvard Kennedy School, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, the Graduate School of Design... A few more still need representatives on board and we'll be working on it!

Just a year ago, President Drew Faust was in town - I am sure some of you remember her address at the prestigious Hôtel de Lassay- and was truly impressed with our activities and, dare I say, professionalism. True, we will remain an association and a friendly club run by volunteers but we aim at the very best. We would like outsiders, whether they are from the campus or from other organizations here in France, to keep fond memories of our events.

Once again, please keep in mind that the Harvard Club of France relies exclusively on its members' annual dues and donations. Our goal for the year 2011-2012 is to increase by at least 30% our membership so that we can offer even more events in great venues. I count on you to spread the word among your Harvard friends and classmates: the HCF is their home away from home, we need them as full members of the community.

A simple click on our website allows them to join our community, receive the monthly newsletter, and register for some of the wonderful activities currently in the pipe line in the months to come: we will host Astronomy Professor Alyssa Goodman on Wednesday November 9th, launch "Harvard Women in France" on November 23rd and welcome all members to our legendary Holiday Party on December 13th. You can already mark your calendars. And, on January 18th, the Harvard Kennedy School newly-formed French chapter will welcome one of the school's celebrity professors. This will be a good way to start a very political year, with presidential elections taking place on both sides of the Atlantic. Updates on this, and more, will follow.

As always, all suggestions and ideas are welcome and you may always contact the Committee via our friendly Club Coordinator Courtney Pulitzer , or feel free to write to me directly at president@harvardclub.fr

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Warm regards,

Philippe

Strike! Harvard/Columbia's 2011 Annual Bowling Competition

Once again, the Harvard Club of France faced-off vs. the Columbia Alumni Club in what has become a tradition in the Annual Bowling Competition. Two years ago, Harvard won. This year, due to an overly-large Columbia turn-out, we mixed the teams, so everybody won! Held this year at the Bowling Mouffetard in the 5th arrondissement. It was a fun and relaxing evening. Get ready and mark your Calendars: the 2012 Bowling Competition date should be February 9th. (To be confirmed).

Exclusive Sotheby's Event, for HCF Benefactors

Thanks to Tim Ryback (PhD, GSAS '88) and the Académie Diplomatique Internationale for organizing a private viewing of important historical manuscripts and valuable photographs at Sotheby's. This evening was a perk for our Benefactors, who  mingled with Young Diplomats from ADI and Sotheby's invitees.

Mr. Ryback was very welcoming and Sotheby's CEO Nicolas Cerutti had a special word for our Club in his introductory speech.  Black and white crystal glasses and foie gras sushi rounded off this Parisian evening on Faubourg St. Honoré.

Harvard Women France

HWF

The new Harvard Women France initiative will officially launch with an event on November 23, 2011. Alumnae women in France will network with the encouragement of some of our most stellar graduates. Participants will also have the chance to get to know the HWF team, which is comprised of members from the HBSCF and HCF clubs.  For more information, you can contact Christine Valentin at the HBSCF or Carine Barco at the HCF. Check your email for reminders...

Harvard Kennedy School - France Chapter

HKS France Chapter
Benoit, Brigitte, ClaireThe Harvard Kennedy School France Chapter kicked off its first speaker event on October 26th, with Brigitte Alepin, (HKS 2006) giving insight on the role played by antiquated tax structures in the financial crises. This event was well attended and, although the topic was very serious, the atmosphere was friendly during the ensuing glass of wine. The success of this foretells a great year of this exciting series.

This month HKS Alumni is also launching its executive "Leaders Luncheon" series with the participation of Astrid Panosyan (HKS'98) on November 17th.

Calling All Harvard Professors!

If you (our dear readers) have any connections with a Harvard professor, please let us know! Many of them travel to Paris and we would love to see if they might have availability to speak for us during their stay.

November has a full slate of events, but my sights are turning to the HOLIDAY PARTY on Dec. 13. We are making our list and checking it twice... Membership VP Felicia Henderson has arranged for a live musical quartet to entertain us. I am sorting through all the goodies provided by Harvard to help celebrate the 375th anniversary of the University! We thank sponsor Jones Day whose generosity allows us to return again this year to the delightful Marshall Center, while keeping Holiday Party cost to a minimum for our members. Save the date!  As always, we hope you enjoyed this newsletter. Please send us any comments. I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event, Courtney Pulitzer, Club Coordinator
