April 2011
President's Welcome

Dear Friends,

From the Middle East to Asia and Africa, the world has been shaken by many dramatic events since the beginning of the year. Harvard is asking its clubs to stay in touch with world events, and this club is trying its best to contribute. I invite you to donate to the Japan Red Cross through the HCF website.

This week, our Tokyo-based friend and colleague Vincent Cobée will be in Paris to give us an update on what life has been like in Japan for the past two months. More news on this will be coming up soon.

As it happens, April is also the HAA Global Month of Service. Harvard alumni and students from around the world should once again come together through the common act of providing service to others. Please check on http://service.clubsandsigs.harvard.edu and let us know if
you have other ideas or suggestions.

We have had many activities in March, ending the month with two great speakers: Sociology Prof. Michèle Lamont who gave a fascinating speech comparing French and American cultures across class and racial boundaries (30 March) and New York Times Foreign Correspondent Steven Erlanger who commented on the 2011 Middle Eastern situation (31 March).

This month, please register on amiando for a fabulous film screening evening "Race to Nowhere - the dark side of America's achievement culture", followed by a debate with MP
and well-known pediatrician Edwige Antier. This will take place on April 13th at the Foreign Press Center at the Grand Palais, one of the best locations in central Paris.

The spring will be lively with numerous events happening in May: Prof. Antoine Picon on "Digital cities" on May 2nd; Wine tasting at "L'Ecluse" on May 11th; Prof. Roland Baron speaking on medical research in the United States; finally, a breakfast with the French Official in charge of economic intelligence, HCF member Olivier Buquen, on May 31st.

Also, please start spreading the word about our great annual gathering: the famous all-alumni Peniche party which this year takes place on the night of June 8th!

Speaker Series with Michele Lamont ~ March 30

Michele LamontIn an dynamic presentation, Harvard Sociology Professor Michele Lamont spoke on comparing French and American cultures and attitudes regarding racism across class and racial boundaries. She spoke about the differences regarding attitudes from a market perspective (American) and solidarity perspective (French) and many other deep social ties that create the perceptions today. Afterward, during the cocktail reception at the lovely France-Ameriques salon, all the attendees had much to discuss and reflect upon.
Speaker Series with Steven Erlanger ~ March 31
Steven ErlangerLeading off with some impressive demographics about the current Arab nations, compared to Western nations, the guests gathered for the talk with New York Times Paris Bureau chief Steven Erlanger at the Foreign Press Center (CAPE) got a background on the Arab Spring and potential challenges.  For example, the average age in most Eastern nations is 22 whereas the average age in the United States and Europe is 40.  He spoke about places that caused him concern, and places that inspired hope. Erlanger took many questions from the floor, making this a very dynamic evening for Harvard and Stanford alumni and their guests. Afterward, there was champagne and Persian hors d'oeuvres in honor of the Persian New Year!
