March 2011
President's Welcome

Dear Members and friends,

Spring is almost here, and so is commencement for all Harvard students. In a few months, the University and its various schools will acknowledge hundreds of new graduates.

The Harvard Club of France for its part wants to keep the link. On February 7th, about 25 people from all sides of the campus convened at the Center for European Studies (courtesy of Patricia Craig, the Center's Executive Director). Jonathan Kamler and I were delighted to meet so many compatriots willing to keep in touch with France!Jonathan and Emmanuel Cassimatis, our recently-arrived Executive Committee member, are now connected to a dynamic group of French and Francophone students -in particular Alexandra Goujon (HKS 12), Marianne Najafi (HKS11), Valentine Poumadère (College 14). We will do our utmost to create a strong link between the two sides of the Atlantic, and welcome all visitors from Cambridge in the next few months.

In the meantime, I am glad to announce several events in March: on Thursday 3rd, we will gather for a Happy Hour at a new venue : Williams Bar, 26 avenue de Friedland, 75008 Paris.

On March 24th, we will jointly host a business breakfast at the Cercle Interallié with our HBS Club friends the MSN Director for Europe Alexandre Michelin on "Microsoft's Content Strategy in Europe."

Finally, on March 30th, we will host Harvard Sociology Professor Michèle Lamont at France-Amériques, for an evening talk on the following theme : "Comparing French and American Cultures Across Class and Racial Boundaries."  I am delighted that Prof. Lamont has accepted to address our members on such a fascinating subject.

I look forward to seeing you at all these events and wish you a happy March!

Warm regards,
Philippe

Recent Grads Improv Night
And now for something a little different... like a night of Recent grads at Improv nightimprov! It was last Friday night, February 25th and at 8:00 PM, several young Harvard grads gathered with other alumni at O'Sullivan's Pub in Montmartre. Organized by: PAN - Paris Alumni Network, the audience picked from a special "Impro Menu" with short scenes and challenges. This highly interactive evening with audience participation was just 40 minutes--but offered a lifetime of memories!

Professor Heisbourg: European Strategy in 2011

Our next Quarterly Dinner will be on Wednesday 9 March (7.30 pm for 8 pm) at Maison des Polytechniciens, 12, rue de Poitiers in the VIIe behind the Musée d'Orsay (Metro:Rue du Bac or Solférino, Parking; Bac-Montalembert, rue du Bac or Voie sur berge, by the Musée d'Orsay)

We are extremely fortunate in having as our guest speaker François Heisbourg, a leading authority on world strategy.  Professor Heisbourg, a graduate of Institut des Etudes Politiques and E.N.A., is the Chairman of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the British 'think tank' on international affairs.  He was its Director from 1987 to 1992, after which he founded, at the request of Pierre Joxe, then Minister of Defence, the French equivalent - Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique (FRS).  He has written extensively on Iran, on Al Qaida, and more generally on world affairs.  (Consult Google to find out more about his impressive biography) With events unfolding in Egypt, and perhaps the Middle East generally, it will be very interesting to hear his views.
