Harvard - #1 University in the World!

Harvard NewsI am sure you will be pleased to read that Harvard is once again ranked as the #1 university in the world! Read all about it in this article in Le Monde here.
Issue: # 2 September 2010
President's Welcome
Greetings to all. I hope you have had a wonderful summer and an effortless "rentrée". We had an exciting event already this month at Fondation Louis Vuitton and have more planned for you this Fall.

In addition to streamlining our website and communications, and planning exciting events lined up for this year, I would like to take this moment to make another special announcement.

The Harvard Club of France has grown to a point where we could expand and professionalize our organization and hire our first employee! I am pleased to introduce Courtney Pulitzer as our Club Coordinator. Courtney will be assisting in organizing events and managing membership.

Although we now have a Club Coordinator, like many other alumni associations, we will continue to manage all our events registration and our membership online (i.e. no postal mail and no cheque payment). This is the only way to scale up our activities and to be as cost efficient as possible.

Courtney brings a depth of experience to this role. For her own business, she organized monthly "Cocktails with Courtney" events in the United States and internationally and wrote a weekly newsletter "The Cyber Scene." Both venues focused on the people and companies in the "dot com" technology industry. Before moving to Paris in 2007, she worked for Meriwether Capital, a Rockefeller family company.

Please help me welcome Courtney into our community.
Last not least, I am delighted to inform you that Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust will be visiting Paris on November 24th. The last visit of a Harvard President was back in 1997! We are planning a prestigious dinner event in her honor. Please save the date and we will provide you with more details shortly.

Until we meet again,
Nicolas Landrin, President
Tour of the Louis Vuitton Foundation for Creation

As if on cue, two rainbows appeared in the twilight sky just as the spectacular evening was beginning for the presentation and tour of the Louis Vuitton Foundation construction site at the Jardin d'Acclimatation on Friday, September 17, 2010.

After checking in, guests were directed to the 3rd floor conference room within the temporary construction site headquarters, complete with leather couches and the stunning scale model of what will become the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Directeur Délégué de la Fondation, Christian Reyne, gave an animated detailed presentation. Between him and Nicolas Paschal, we learned fascinating facts about this project like: there will be 4000 unique glass pieces, each with different dimensions and curves, they use silicon "moules" (similar to those silicon baking forms) to make the glass panes and there is no budget to speak of--talk about creative and unlimited license!

As the air cooled down, we went out into the open air for a tour of the actual site. No hard-hats were needed, though, as we got to touch samples of the spectacular curved glass and view a life-size model of a module of the building. Here we were privy to construction details; there were different colored metal frames between each window. Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of LVMH, likes the white frames. Frank Gehry, renowned architect of this project, likes the grey. The two frames were on display for all to ponder as the construction continues.

Walking in the protected areas of the Jardin within the construction site, we viewed gazebos with informational panels and a time-delay video showing the construction site from groundbreaking to present day. It was almost comical watching cranes and dump trucks moving at such a fast past, moving beams and piles of dirt in seconds.

We ended back at the terrace, overlooking the site, where Harvard Graduate School of Design Dean Mohsen Mostafavi gave several words. HCF President Nicolas Landrin proposed a toast and we sipped champagne till night fell. Elizabeth Kan, (Harvard class of 1985; Director of Synergies, New Businesses at Louis Vuitton Malletier) and organizer of this event, along with HCF Executive Committee Member Lynn Yu, ushered us towards our buffet dinner under a tent in the Jardin--the LV canteen.

Paying homage to the original building on this site, which was a Grand Palais, and to Gehry's vision of a boat with glass sails, this grand "Fondation pour La Creation" will be home to artists and exhibitions, terraces, restaurants and embodies creative endeavors. It is expected to open in 2012.
Harvard Krokodiloes Impromptu Performance

On July 26, 2010, the Harvard Krokodiloes came to Paris for an impromptu performance for our club.  For such a unique event, we chose a unique venue: the Passerelle Leopold-Sedar Senghor.  Due to inclimate weather (it began raining as the event started!), we moved to the underside of the bridge on the Right Bank.

The steps of the bridge provided perfect seating, protecting the audience and singers from the rain. Guests were already imbibing and chatting when the "Kroks" jaunted our "amphitheater."  They sang old favorites for about 30 minutes and then mingled with fellow alumni living in Paris till they jetted off to their next engagement.

Farewell Claire, but not Au Revoir

Claire Sulmers
Claire Sulmners
If you've attended one of the monthly happy hours, the all-Ivy happy hour held in conjunction with other alumni clubs, the annual péniche cocktail mixer on the Seine or the Christmas party, you may have met HCF's Recent Graduates Committee Vice President Claire Sulmers.

Over the summer her time here in Paris drew to a close and she is now back in New York.

We thought we'd take this moment to highlight Claire, in case you hadn't had a chance to talk with her.

Claire holds a B.A. magna cum laude with highest honors in Romance Languages and Literatures and African-American studies. And this bright woman has woven fashion and writing into a stellar career.

New York and Newsweek are among the magazines where Claire's writing appears. As a style expert, the Wall Street Journal, New York Post, and AOL Black Voices have called her for her knowledge. In addition to all this, she founded her own successful blog, The Fashion Bomb.

The Fashion Bomb reached up to 6,000 daily visitors in August 2006 and was profiled in Harvard University's Crimson Magazine, Howard University's Hilltop Newspaper, and was named an 'Up and Coming' Blog by Women's Wear Daily and 'Blog of the Moment' by Teen Vogue.

In addition to all the amazing work Claire did on all these events for the HCF, she was an anchor on the Yahoo mailing list group, offering invaluable career and housing advice for alums that have recently arrived in Paris. She also strongly encouraged interaction and liaisons with other sister organizations, thus underscoring HCF's fast-growing dynamics and relevance in the Paris community.

Claire will be deeply missed by her HCF family and we sincerely wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavors!
