July Readings at Eagle Harbor Books
Leslie Bratspis - Good Fortune Sun., July 8, 3 PM Gig Harbor first-time author Leslie Bratspis poured her passion for cultural anthropology and metaphysics into Good Fortune, a story of two men from different cultures who benefit from ancient Chinese wisdom. Michael, a high-powered ad exec brought down by the 1994 recession, and Wu, a financially secure restaurant manager at odds with his family because of his business involvement. The men face challenges that, like the mirrored images of the Yin-Yang symbol, are identical yet reversed. Good Fortune awaits them, but first they must discover that happiness is less tied to outward goals than to inner awareness. Yvonne Wakefield - Suitcase Filled with Nails Thurs., July 12, 7:30 PMArtist, art education, and author Yvonne Wakefield focusses on the relationships between women, art, and society in the Middle East in Suitcase Filled With Nails: Lessons Learned From Teaching Art in Kuwait, her memoir of six years teaching art to Muslim women in Kuwait. This slice of life in the Middle East, untarnished by war or terrorism, is one rarely experienced through the media. As Wakefield says: "It is my story of living and working in a country where basic human rights and privileges I took for granted in the States were subject to the whims of a not so whimsical system and culture." Denise Frisino - Whisky Cove Sun., July 15, 3 PM
The story of a young woman who falls in love with a bootlegging captain, Whiskey Cove takes up years later, when the now elderly woman is haunted by the unsolved murder of a member of the Mafia who has destroyed her husband. Aided by a college student, she sets out to unravel the past and stirs up old dangers! William Dietrich - The Emerald Storm Thurs., July 19, 7:30 PM
How They Started: How 30 Good Ideas Became Great Companies is about 30 people who had an idea, and went on to start a business. Those businesses are all extremely successful and most are now household names all across America. Through personal interviews with key sources - including founders, investors and past employees - each profile reveals how the company took its first tentative steps and subsequently became the famous name it is today.
Book Signing: Karen Thompson - The Age of Miracles Fri., July 20, 3 PM
EHB hosts a community conversation between Milenko Matanovic, founder and executive director of the Pomegranate Center, and Bainbridge Island author Bill Cleveland on his book Between Grace and Fear: The Role of Arts in a Time of Change. The book is a collection of interviews on how the arts will contribute to a more just and sustainable society and the conversation between Bill, Milenko, and the audience will likely be a wonderful contemplation of the roles that artists and arts organizations should play.
Rober Goolrick: Heading Out to Wonderful Sun., July 22, 3 PM
An attractive and enigmatic stranger-Charlie Beale, a loner recently home from the war in Europe-wanders into the town of Brownsburg, a sleepy village of only a few hundred people nestled in a valley of Virginia. He brings with him two suitcases: one contains all his worldly possessions, including a set of butcher's knives; the other is full of money. Charlie quickly finds a job at the local butcher shop, and through his work there meets all the townspeople, most notably Sam Haislett, the five-year-old son of the shop's owner, and Sylvan Glass, the beautiful, eccentric teenage bride of the town's richest man.
Michael Camp - Confessions of a Bible Thumper
Sun., July 29, 3 PM
Poulsbo author and former evangelical missionary Michael Camp talks about his book in which, through entertaining vingettes and lively conversations over craft beer, readers learn how he adopted a new vision for a progressive faith in Christ. "...has all the marks of a spiritual classic. Its honesty, courage, humor, and real 'God' experiences are mandatory rungs in the ladder people need to climb... into the dazzling light... Bravo!" - Jessica Maxwell, author of Roll Around Heaven.
