January Readings at Eagle Harbor Books
Marissa Meyer: Cinder Sun., Feb. 8, 2:30 PM This West Sound Read event will take place at the Kitsap Regional Library Poulsbo Branch, 700 NE Lincoln Rd., Poulsbo, WA. Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She's a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister's illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai's, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world's future. Elizabeth Austen: Every Dress a DecisionSun., Feb. 12, 3 PMPublic radio poetry commentator Elizabeth Austen tests the boundaries between the known and the unknowable in her debut poetry collection. The aftermath of a brother's mysterious death forms a subtle narrative spine, around which other pressing questions revolve. In a voice both lyrical and wry, Austen's poems engage headlong in the contradictions of 21st century social expectations, desires and identity. Christine Deavel: WoodnoteSun., Feb. 12, 3 PMWOODNOTE is Christine Deavel's debut and winner of the 2011 Dorothy Brunsman Poetry Prize. Indiana is the backdrop for poems that range through time and lyrically blend poetry, prose, and fragment to deliver their news: "Knowledge comes as a covering snow; below is the old understanding." Chris Grivas & Gerard J. Puccio: The Innovative Team Thurs., Feb. 16, 7:30 PM
In business-fable style, The Innovative Team reveals the impact that our underlying work style preferences have on our teams and their results. This book introduces a uniquely effective set of tools - called FourSight, field-tested by top consultants, but never before presented to a mass audience - that can help anyone from professionals to laymen solve problems and achieve performance breakthroughs.
Matt Ruff: The Mirage Sun., Feb. 19, 3 PM
A mind-bending novel in which an alternate history of 9/11 and its aftermath uncover startling truths about America and the Middle East.
Mark Auslander: The Accidental Slave Owner Thurs., Feb. 23, 7:30 PM
The book explores how a story of a single enslaved woman, whose life was intertwined with some of the most dramatic episodes in Methodist history, has been told, retold and struggled over across 160 years in African American and white families. Part history, part anthropology, and part detective story, The Accidental Slaveowner traces, from the 1850s to the present day, how different groups of people have struggled with one powerful story about slavery.
Ryan Boudinot: Blueprints of the Afterlife Sun., Feb. 26, 3 PM
Ryan Boudinot is one of the most promising young novelists of his generation, called "wickedly talented" (The Boston Globe ) and "darkly funny" (The New York Times Book Review). Blueprints of the Afterlife is a tour de force-part George Saunders, part Philip K. Dick; a novel that marries absurd satire with the high-concept storytelling of slipstream sci-fi.
