Selfors: 3rd Annual Student Creative Writing Contest
To celebrate the release of her 3rd book for children, Suzanne Selfors is once again sponsoring a writing contest for local students, grades 1 - 8. Smells Like Dog is the story of a dog with a very special talent. Create your own story about a special dog. Maybe it's a dog you already know. Maybe it's an imaginary dog. Try to keep your story to one or two pages. You can draw a picture if you'd like. Six stories will be chosen and their authors will each receive a $40 gift certificate to Eagle Harbor Books. Everyone who enters will get a bookmark and a special Dogploma of Creative Writing. Winners will be announced on May 23rd, 3:00 pm at Eagle Harbor Books. Deadline to enter is May 20th. More...

You are invited to lend a hand re-planting and rennovating the garden beds surrounding the Senior Center! Join volunteers from Island human service agencies at the Ice Cream Social at 2pm. Seattle Opera Preview with Norm Hollingshead: Amelia Sat., May 1, 3 PM
Amelia is an opera in two acts by Daron Hagen, with a libretto by Gardner McFall. It is scheduled to premiere at the Seattle Opera on May 8, 2010. The opera is set in America and Vietnam between 1966 to 1996. It revolves around the title character, Amelia, who is expecting her first child, who explores her relationship with her father, Dodge, a U.S. Navy pilot who died in the Vietnam War when she was a child. West Sound Reads: A Brand-New Me!, with Henry Winkler Sun., May 2, 1:30 PM
Since 2003, Winkler has collaborated with Lin Oliver on a the popular Hank Zipzer series of children's books about a 4th grade boy, Hank Zipzer, who is dyslexic. Winkler who also has the learning disability, has often discussed that this was an unhappy part of his childhood. Winkler has published 17 books about his hero Zipzer, the "world's greatest underachiever."
