Site 5, McCabe-Pardy Residence 9856 Torvanger Road Private Residence Miles Yanick, AIA, LEED AP Architect Molly McCabe, AKBD, Designer Three Star Built Green Remodel certification. Vision: This whole house remodel project embodies all the primary principals of sustainable design and construction by utilizing: ●durable, low maintenance materials and finishes ● a variety of resource efficient engineered and/or sustainably harvested wood products including glue lams, LVLs, factory built trusses and joists, site milled materials and wood veneers ● low VOC finishes, sealants and adhesives ● salvaged, recycled content and bio degradable materials ● energy and water efficient appliances, lighting and plumbing fixtures, and ● minimizing the disturbance of the natural landscape The project began with the well planned "deconstruction" of the homeowner's original 2,000 square foot modular home (sited in 1979). Deconstruction included removal of all interior walls and the roof system down to the sub-floor and exterior walls and allowed the homeowners to divert over 40,000 pounds of construction debris from the landfill, save several thousands of dollars in disposal fees as well as tens of thousands in material costs - everything was either repurposed or recycled. The impetus for the remodel was four fold: 1) the original home's floor plan that did not accommodate two professionals working from home, 2) the fuel bills for the house exceeded consumption expectations, 3) the homeowners felt that there was something about the house that was impacting their health, and 4) to create an element of surprise - that the outside of the house belies what visitors will find inside. The project has successfully addressed all four goals and more.
