Who is Mary? What's this buzz about Mary? Everyone is talking about Mary. Mary this and Mary that. Why the fuss? What is going on? Catholics who idolize Her have it all backwards - Mary shouldn't be worshipped. Some Protestants seem to despise her because attention to her means attention taken away from Jesus. For Muslims, she is a holy woman mentioned more times in the Koran than any other woman other than Fatima, the daughter of Muhammed. So what is the fuss all about? What is the truth about Mary? Mary is the biological mother of Jesus Christ. From the cross, Jesus asked Mary to behold John and, by extension, all her children to take care of us. Prayer and our faith help us to understand and appreciate the immense beauty and mystery of Mary's motherhood but even modern science now gives us a little something more to ponder. According to recent studies, a mother carries the DNA of her children from the moment of conception and children carry the DNA of their mother. In an article written by J. Lee Nelson (www.scientificamerican.com), he states, "Recent research suggests that each of us harbors some cells that originated in other, genetically distinct individuals - a condition called microchimerism. All of us probably save cells we have acquired from our mother during gestation, and women who have been pregnant retain cells that come from the fetus." Research also suggests that we carry these cells for our entire life. This would suggest that Mary carried the cells of Jesus and Jesus carried cells of Mary. As mother and Son, Mary and Jesus shared a special bond but it is an interesting thought to consider that they are physically present in each other for all eternity. Christ exists in his glorified human body and Mary, according to longstanding Church tradition, was assumed into heaven body and soul. (click here to read more)
