CALIFORNIA NORTHSTATE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY is looking to move into the former AAA call center building at 8700 West Taron Dr., Elk Grove. College officials indicated that half of the approximately 100,000sf space will be dedicated to a pharmacology college and the other half to a medical college. Each space will include multiple classrooms, administrative offices, student lounge and related facilities. The college is complementary to the growing medical gateway in Elk Grove as multi-million dollar expansion projects from three major health care entities-Mercy's Methodist Hospital, Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health-continue in the area.
buybuy BABY will open a new 31,000sf store this summer on Laguna Blvd. offering an extensive selection of infant and toddler merchandise (including furniture, car seats, bedding, health and safety essentials, learning and development products, clothing and toys) from the industry's leading manufacturers. The store will also offer a Baby Gift Registry. buybuy BABY was founded in 1996 and acquired by Bed Bath & Beyond in 2007. The chain now operates more than 30 stores that range in size from 28,000 to 60,000 square feet.
KONICOM, INC. recently purchased 2,000sf at Center Pointe at Laguna in Elk Grove. This computer service outsourcing company for small businesses is currently in the process of performing tenant improvements.
|New $30 Million Medical Facility Will Create More Than 250 New Jobs in Elk GroveCatholic Healthcare West--one of the nations largest not-for-profit health care systems--and the largest private hospital system in California--celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Mercy Medical Plaza this month,
a state-of-the-art facility that will create more than 250 new jobs in Elk Grove.
The 65,000sf, $30 million facility will house physicians, an advanced imaging center, laboratory and outpatient surgery center. Located on 30 acres of land near the busy intersection of Elk Grove Blvd. and Bruceville Rd., the building is part of the first phase of a medical complex that will serve the healthcare needs in the Elk Grove/South Sacramento area. The outpatient surgery center will operate under the license of Mercy's Methodist Hospital (http://www.methodistsacramento.org) located in South Sacramento just outside Elk Grove city limits. CHW Medical Foundation will operate Mercy Imaging Centers and Mercy Medical Group physician offices in the new building. The plaza is scheduled to open in spring 2012.
"Our new Mercy Medical Plaza will add more than 250 new jobs to the city of Elk Grove," said Tim Moran, Sacramento Service Area President and Methodist Hospital President and CEO, and EGEDC board member. "As new residents and businesses continue to move to Elk Grove, the need for quality healthcare will continue to grow. With the addition of our new medical office building, Mercy is ready to provide quality healthcare to the residents of Elk Grove."

"Our new medical office building brings 21st century technology together with the compassion and excellent quality care provided by Mercy's doctors, providers, technicians and staff."
Other multi-million dollar medical expansion projects are also underway in Elk Grove. Kaiser Permanente recently opened up the first trauma center in the area and is continuing expansion projects. Sutter Health is expanding its presence in Elk Grove as funding was recently approved for construction of a 7,600-square-foot ambulatory surgery center at its 43-acre medical campus. Plans for the Sutter site also include the construction of a 68-bed community hospital.
With these expansions come vast opportunities for professionals in the medical field and other medical service auxiliary businesses. Businesses like Reddy Urgent Care (http://www.reddyurgentcare.com/) have recently located to the area, seeing Elk Grove as the gateway to medical expansion in this part of the Sacramento region. Kittel Family Veterinary Practice recently located their business in the busy Laguna Oaks Shopping Center, near the Mercy expansion site, with plans to cater their business directly toward families working and visiting the medical plaza and living in the nearby neighborhoods.
Close to the Mercy expansion site is the future home of the Elk Grove Civic Center as well as the finished suburban community of Madeira that will feature a total of 7,500 residences when complete (with access to trails, parks and walkways). The Elk Grove Automall is also close by and features more than 15 dealerships with other car manufacturers eyeing the site for future expansion.

opened last November in Laguna Oaks Shopping Center at the busy corner of Big Horn and Elk Grove boulevards, near Mercy's Methodist Hospital's multi-million dollar expansion project and the site of the future Elk Grove Civic Center.
"We chose this location for a number of reasons--most obviously, for the all the major development happening across the street," said Charleen Kittel who opened the business with her husband, Dr. Dan Kittel, and acts as office manager. "Also, it's a section of Elk Grove where housing development was really underway until the recession happened, but there's a large chunk of land that, when things pick up, they will go back to building homes. Not only did this location put us in the middle of a large residential area, we are located off one of the two main streets here in Elk Grove."
Elk Grove has also been an ideal location for the Kittel's to raise their children as well.
"Our kids go to school here in Elk Grove so we have school, work and home all within a 10 minute little circle," said Kittel. "Elk Grove is a really nice city to live in and definitely a good place to raise your kids. Elk Grove has something for everyone--apartments, townhouses, condos, old-style neighborhoods where houses are beautiful and the lots are bigger, new houses coming in, good schools and nice parks all over the place."
Another big advantage to locating their veterinary practice in Elk Grove is the close proximity to the University of California, Davis--one of the country's top public research universities that produces more Ph.D. life scientists than any other university in the nation. The U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is ranked among the top veterinary schools in the nation and provides statewide teaching, research and service programs benefiting animal, public and environmental health.
"It's definitely an advantage being so close to U.C. Davis for the fact they are a referral teaching hospital. There are cases that benefit from being referred over to the university that is within an hour's drive, said Kittel. "We also benefit form the amount of knowledge that's coming out of U.C. Davis because we are so close to it. We don't have to wait until something gets published--we're hearing things through the grapevine from other professionals in the area," said Kittel. "That's the nice thing about the medical community, the closer you are to a particular medical community--whether it be animal medicine or human medicine--these are the people you know that you've gone to a meeting or workshop with who are publishing papers and spreading news across the country to other vet hospitals, and we get the information first because we're so close to where it's all happening."
