Radiate Hope Festival June 18, 2011
The Radiate Hope Foundation supports Wisconsin non-profits that serve people with cancer. It was founded by employees of TomoTherapy, Inc. of Middleton, a company that makes cutting-edge radiation therapy equipment. Badger Childhood Cancer Network is very excited to have been chosen as a Radiate Hope partner organization for 2011!
The major Radiate Hope fundraiser is their annual Festival, held this year on Saturday, June 18th from noon to 8 pm at Keva Sports Center in Middleton. There will be live entertainment and great food and beer available throughout the day, plus a volleyball tournament, raffles (win airfare for 2 to Hawaii!) and tons of activities for kids and families. Check out the website for more information and come out for a fun event to support local groups that make life easier for people with cancer!

Volunteers Needed
 | | Happy, smiling volunteers! |
Would you like to help us make Suzy's Run/Walk 2011 the biggest and best fund-raising and awareness-raising event in our history?
We need volunteers to help us on our PR and Promotions committee, to create great posters, press releases, emails and Facebook postings. If you'd like to motivate individuals and organizations to form teams to run and walk, if you'd like to inspire people to support the brave kids and families we serve, we'd love to have your help!
We have other volunteer opportunities available, too, including:
--Volunteers to help out on the day of the Run/Walk
--The Party Planning Committee, organizing the details of our fun quarterly social events for kids with cancer and their families (Summer Picnic, Halloween Bash, Holiday party and Spring Party).
If you'd like to help us with one of these volunteer activities or learn more about volunteer opportunities with BCCN, please call Anne at 231-8006 or email anne@badgerchildhoodcancer.org

Emma is 9 years old and lives in Appleton with her mom and dad and two older sisters. She suffers from NF1 which has caused her to have multiple tumors, including brain tumors. Diagnosed in June of 2007, she recently started her 4th chemotherapy protocol. None of them so far have slowed the tumors' progression and have required driving to Madison anywhere from once a week to once a month over the past 4 years. Her current protocol is at least another 2 years. She had to have a below the knee amputation on one leg last Fall, learning pretty quickly how to get around on a prosthesis. You can't keep a strong girl down.
Emma is a ray of sunshine and makes people smile. She loves sports, arts and crafts and movies. If you're ever following the American Family Children's Hospital ambulance, look up and say hi to Emma - that's her photo on the back!
A Note From Emma's Mom:
The past 4 years of our lives have included countless trips to Madison, 110 miles one way. Many Many Many gallons of gas, many missed days of work for Dad, some without pay when vacation ran out. (Mom's full time job is taking care of Emma's health). We also have 2 other children, Allie 15 and Delaney 12. We have tried hard to keep their lives as normal as possible, but it isn't always easy when the whole world revolves around keeping Emma healthy and sometimes has required us taking off on a moments notice.
The economic impact of having a child with cancer goes far beyond medical bills, it is meals when at chemo, meals in the hospital, special food for the child who just doesn't feel up to eating what everyone else is due to chemo, meals out when the caregiver is just too tired to cook. The wear and tear on the vehicles from driving 200 miles a week or every other week. Often people don't realize that the cost of the treatment goes far beyond what insurance can ever cover. This is why organizations such as Badger Childhood Cancer Network are so imporant to families.

What Can't Those Nurses Do?
The P4 Nurses, who provide world-class care to kids with cancer at American Family Childrens Hospital, also know a thing or two about baking. In April they put on a fabulous bake sale at the UW Hospital and Clinics and raised over $1000 for Badger Childhood Cancer Network! We are honored to have their support as they seek out yet another way to make a difference in the lives of these great kids and their families. Have You Hugged a Nurse Today?
