Have You Thanked a Nurse Today?
We want to thank a whole bunch of them! In December, the P4 nursing staff at American Family Children's Hospital held a bake sale in the main hospital and raised an impressive donation for our Family Assistance Fund! They enrich the lives of kids and families in so many ways, and somehow found yet another way to reach out and help. We are honored! |

Moving Forward in 2011
Families of survivors, on treatment and off, can get a copy of "Moving Forward: A Guide to Getting and Staying Physically Active for Childhood Cancer Survivors." The guide was created by UW Physical Therapy Ph.D. students in cooperation with Badger Childhood Cancer Network.
Many young people who played sports, rode bikes, swam, ran and climbed before their cancer diagnosis get out of the habit of physical activity during aggressive cancer treatments that can last for one to three years. This long period of inactivity can have serious negative effects on their growing bodies, and lead to unhealthy habits and weight gain in the years after treatment. The "Moving Forward" guide has activities to build strength, endurance and flexibility so childhood cancer survivors can counteract the effects of chemotherapy, surgeries and radiotherapy and improve their range of motion and muscle strength.
Call the BCCN office at 608-231-8006 and leave your name and address so we can mail you a copy, or email anne (at) bagderchildhoodcancer.org.

We Appreciate Our Illinois Supporters!
Did you know that approximately 20% of the kids treated for cancer and blood disorders at American Family Children's Hospital live in northern Illinois? We may have added "Badger" to our name, but we still value the wonderful Illinois kids and families we serve! We're grateful for some recent generous - and creative! - donations from supporters in Illinois who want to make life easier for kids with cancer. - The crew of the 148 ft schooner, the Tall Ship Windy, which gives tours of the Chicago shoreline on Lake Michigan, raised funds for us during the 2010 sailing season and presented us with a generous donation this fall!
- Our newest BCCN board member, Badger basketball alumnus Rick Piacenza, lives in the Chicago area and organized two successful events on our behalf-- a Thanksgiving fundraiser at Niyama Yoga of Wilmette and a "Yoga for a Cause" class at Sanctuary Yoga in Highwood.
- Rockford Premier League Soccer held a Childhood Cancer benefit tournament and made a nice donation to us through manager Peter Singh, dad of cancer survivor Quin.
- The family of a young Illinois cancer survivor moved quickly into action recently when they learned of a child from their county diagnosed with leukemia at AFCH. They have collected donations from people in their area, establishing funds to make sure that local families have some security during the financial upheavals that commonly hit hard in those first months of aggressive cancer treatment.

Badger Childhood Cancer Network has received a grant to support our Monthly Family Gatherings for 2011! Bright Horizons Family Solutions created the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children in 1999 to help achieve its mission of making a difference in the lives of children and families in the communities where Bright Horizons Family Solutions employees live and work.
We are honored to have received the grant and to have Bright Horizons Foundation as the presenting sponsor of our family support group!

A note from the Executive Director:
I want to take this opportunity to bid farewell to our outgoing Board Chair, Jim Egle, and thank him for his faithful service to our organization over the last several years. His passion to make life better for kids and families has shone through in so many ways as he has worked to help us grow and mature as an organization, and more recently to steer us through a difficult economy. We wish you the best in everything, Jim.
I would also like to introduce our new Board Chair, Mardi Stroud, and ask you to join me in welcoming her as she takes the helm of the organization for a 2-year term. Mardi is a top-selling Realtor for First Weber Group Realtors and the mother of three handsome sons, one of whom is a cancer survivor. Her background in nursing as well as her knowledge of marketing give her a unique perspective on the work we do and we're delighted to have her leadership as we move into 2011.
Best wishes for a happy, healthy, safe and fun New Year!
Anne
