A Season of Thanks
As the year draws to a close, we would like to thank our community partners, the organizations, businesses and individuals that work with us to provide emotional, informational and financial support to families of children with cancer. They have truly taken to heart the notion that "Kids can't fight cancer alone!"
The Swift Hospitality Group stocked us up with shampoo, body wash, lotion, toothbrushes and toothpaste for our Parent Toiletry Kits that go into the New Diagnosis Bags.
The Lawrence University Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity answered a call to the Appleton community for help, and donated the proceeds of their fall concert to help one of our families living there.
Some of Santa's elves have 'adopted' families of kids with cancer for the holidays. Thanks to all who are helping us stretch our limited resources to make sure that families in need have some good cheer this year.
Beloit Optimist Club has been a friend of Capital Candlelighters/ Badger Childhood Cancer Network for several years. They have stepped up to provide assistance and support for local families in difficult financial circumstances who have a child fighting cancer.
The Whitewater Optimist Club has chosen to partner with us starting this fall, and we will be working with their Childhood Cancer Campaign Committee to serve kids with cancer in a multi-county area.
We are honored to have a relationship with the Monroe and Brodhead Optimist Clubs. Both groups have provided financial donations directly to us and we have been very grateful to be the charity partner chosen by the Brodhead Club for the last 4 years for their fall Sugar River Bike Tour fundraiser. Both of these clubs also provide emergency assistance to families of kids with cancer in high financial need in their communities, helping us to leverage the amount of utility/grocery/rent assistance we can provide into something significantly greater.
The Madison Rotary Foundation has generously presented Capital Candlelighters with a generous grant for each of the last 4 years to provide emergency financial assistance to families of kids with cancer in Dane County. Our 2010 Community Grant totaled $3000 and was used for rent/mortgage assistance, car repairs, utility bills, groceries, gas and other basic expenses that protected the health and safety of more than 20 children with cancer.
Family Christian Bookstores just donated six cases of beautiful teddy bears for our New Diagnosis Bags. Our volunteers give each one a good hug before packing it safely in a duffel bag for a kid with cancer.
Speaking of Volunteers -- they fill our hearts with joy, and make everything we do possible. They stuff the duffel bags, sort the beads, entertain the kids, solicit the auction items, decorate the party rooms, sign up the runners and walkers, ask for food and toy donations, serve the goodies and clean up afterwards. They run committees and meet with donors and speak to community groups. Thank you for your service, volunteers - and get ready for a busy 2011!

Car Donation
We serve a couple of families of kids with cancer who would greatly benefit from having a reliable working automobile. If you have a working car that you would like to donate to Badger Childhood Cancer Network, please contact Anne at 608-231-8006. If you want to take a tax deduction for your donation, please consult your tax professional. It is our understanding that
1) if the donated automobile is used as part of our stated mission as direct assistance to a family of a child with cancer, you may claim the "Fair Market Value" of the car for tax purposes. 2) a car donated to a non-profit organization to be sold for cash can only be claimed up to the actual sale price of the automobile after the donation is made.
Please feel free to forward this to anyone you know!

A note from the Executive Director:
We're looking forward to a great 2011, and we hope you are, too!
Our monthly family support group is still going strong, we're providing lots of Hero Beads to kids at AFCH, New Diagnosis bags are getting packed and delivered, and we have found a high-quality tote to serve as our new Ashley's Med Box/Bag, replacing the older style we can no longer get. We're planning for a very fun Spring Party and some other unique, fun experiences for the special kids and families we serve.
If you want to donate gift cards, toys, small electronics or other items to make the holidays brighter for kids and teens with cancer, please deliver them to our office by December 17th. Our elves will make sure they get into the right hands! We also have a listing in the 2010 United Way Holiday Wish List (under Capital Candlelighters).
Wishing you Joyous Holidays and a Happy, Healthy New Year,
Anne
