Creative Fundraisers Support Kids with Cancer! | Route 73 Rumble Sports With Heart!
|
Northern Illinois high school football rivals, the Lena-Winslow Panthers and the Eastland-Pearl City Wildcats, met on the field for the 2nd Annual Route 73 Rumble on October 15th. Again this year, both teams sold popular Rt 73 Rumble T-shirts, raffle tickets and sports memorabilia, raising funds to support local families fighting cancer, including a generous donation to our financial assistance program serving kids in their area. Local school coaches in the area also hosted a Coaches Fighting Cancer golf outing during the summer, donating a portion of their proceeds to our work with northern Illinois kids!

Candlelighters/BCCN families surprised us by hosting pajama days in their kids' schools and presenting us with checks to support our programs. Our great thanks to Washington Elementary in Whitewater, WI and Royal Oaks Elementary in Sun Prairie, WI! Last spring, the Clinton schools FFA program also sponsored a Caps Day for us where kids paid a fee to be allowed to wear a hat to school that day. Way to go, students! | | TeslaCon 2010 |
"Steampunk" is a creative movement in literature and material culture that allows participants to enter a complete imaginative world set in the Victorian Era, but with some interesting twists of modern technology and art. Local designer Eric Larson has created a major convention for Steampunk aficionados, called TeslaCon, that will take place in Madison Nov 5-7. The convention has named Capital Candlelighters Badger Childhood Cancer Network as their charitable partner and we will benefit from fundraising done during the weekend. National Childhood Cancer Awareness Tree 2010
American Childhood Cancer Organization Gold Ribbon Tree Lighting Ceremony December 11th Old Post Office Pavilion, Washington, DC
Each ribbon on the tree bears the name of a child who has or has had cancer, and can be returned to you in January as a precious keepsake. Families from across the nation submit their children's names to be part of the tree. The Gold Ribbon Awareness Tree is a powerful symbol seen by tens of thousands of people every year. The 23-foot tree will be set up on November 20th, and it is important for it to be covered with as many gold ribbons and names as possible before the Tree Lighting Event. Passersby throughout the holiday season are touched by the sheer volume of ribbons and names, evidence of the tremendous impact of childhood cancer in the United States. The annual tree lighting ceremony is attended by hundreds of children and their families, with prominent childhood cancer researchers and members of Congress taking part as guests and speakers. American Childhood Cancer Organization was known for the first 40 years of its existence as Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation. As a national organization, it supplies regional affiliates, including our organization, with resources to support our programs for local families. They provide the beads for our Hero Bead program at substantially reduced cost from retail, and produce a phenomenal selection of books for children with cancer, their parents and teachers, that we distribute to educate and empower our families each step of the way through their journey. |

A note from the Executive Director:
The name change to Badger Childhood Cancer Network is moving along! Keep an eye out for the new logo by early 2011.
A few local churches and charitable organizations are working to provide holiday assistance to families of kids with cancer who are struggling financially this year. If your group or workplace would like to adopt a family for the holidays or donate grocery cards or other store cards to help make the winter a little brighter for a family going through a difficult time, please call me or send me an e-mail.
