Team Abbie | A sunny Sunday morning at Keva Sports Center brought 525 participants out to support area kids with cancer! See photos here and here. Our runners and walkers were delighted by a surprise greeting from golf legend Andy North, as well as touching remarks from two AFCH oncologists, Dr. Diane Puccetti and Dr. Paul Sondel. The kids were thrilled and excited during our closing ceremonies by an amazing show put on by yet another of our oncologists, the brilliant stage magician, Dr. Ken DeSantes!
Congratulations to our winning runners in the 5K and 10K races. See the results at this link.

EXCITING NEWS! We're getting a new name!
Capital Candlelighters is proud of our role as the organization supporting families of children with cancer in south-central Wisconsin since 1980. For 40 years, "Candlelighters" has been synonymous in the pediatric oncology world with "childhood cancer family support."
Outside of our own network of hospitals and medical professionals, however, it has been hard to explain to people what we are and who we serve. The name "Candlelighters" does not mention kids or cancer, and is sometimes mistaken for a religious organization or a company selling candles! Because we're listed in the "Support Groups" section of the white pages, we get calls from many individuals looking for all kinds of peer support unrelated to childhood cancer.
Our board has spent several months examining options for an organization name that better reflects the work we do and the area we serve. They've chosen a name and we're now in the process of developing a new logo and visuals and updating our web site. You may have noticed that we've already started to make the shift, using both our old and new names for the last month or so. We're happy to say that as of January 2011 we will be known as:
Badger Childhood Cancer Network . . . because kids can't fight cancer alone! |

A note from the Executive Director:
Our priority this fall and winter will be to make sure that, in this difficult economy, we are able provide as much transportation and grocery assistance, utility help, car repairs and other basic aid to families of kids on treatment for cancer as we possibly can. Our New Diagnosis Bag program, gas card distribution, books, phone support and the Hero Bead Program are going along as strongly as ever.
We'll be pulling back a bit on social events to make sure we can cover these other urgent expenses, so we ask our families who want to get together with others to please plan to attend our monthly Family Gatherings at Vitense Golfland. Every 1st Wednesday night we'll be there with dinner, sports activities, kids' crafts, and plenty of chat time.
Have a Happy Halloween!
All the best,
Anne Spurgeon Executive Director Capital Candlelighters - Badger Childhood Cancer Network 517 N. Segoe Rd #100 PO Box 5624 <-----note our updated PO Box # Madison, WI 53705 608-231-8006 http://www.capcan.org
