National Organization Changes Its Name

Our national parent organization, Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, was formed in 1970 by parents of children with cancer who lobbied to get research funding on childhood cancer into President Nixon's "War on Cancer" legislation.  They formed a support network for families that led to information sharing and emotional support for tens of thousands over 40 years. In the pediatric oncology world, "Candlelighters" has always meant "support for kids with cancer and their families."  In the larger community, though, it has been hard for the organization to build awareness and raise funds with a name that doesn't clearly say what they do.  After considerable thought, the national organization has introduced its new name, "American Childhood Cancer Organization."
