Seasons Greetings from Capital Candlelighters!

Thanks to all who have 'adopted a family' for the holidays and to those who have contributed generously to our holiday party.  You've made something very special possible!

One of our moms did an interview with NBC Channel 15 to talk about the holiday party.

Here's another wonderful story to brighten your holidays.  It's about a Capital Candlelighters' kid (check out his Hero Beads in the video!) and the great support his family has received from Ronald McDonald House:

Generous Organizations, Businesses and Individuals Are Helping Kids With Cancer
this Winter!
Jolly Wishes Snowman-- Kohl's Madison-West is a sponsor of the Holiday Party, including an employee toy drive!
-- Saint Maria Goretti Parish of Madison and our local office of American Cancer Society have placed Capital Candlelighters ornaments on a Giving Tree in their lobbies, letting staff and visitors provide holiday assistance to families in need.  The ACS office is also doing a toy drive to provide prizes for the party games.
-- The employees of Rate Watch of Fort Atkinson have chosen to adopt a Jefferson County childhood cancer family for gifts and groceries for the second year in a row.

It's not too late to assist the family of a child in cancer treatment.  If your family, church, school or business would like to support one of our great families, call or email Anne in the Capital Candlelighters' office.
Web Site Helps Families and Friends Organize a Network of Help and Support
Joined hands
Several Capital Candlelighters' families use a free web site called Lotsahelpinghands.com which describes itself as a "free of charge, private, web-based community to organize family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues - a family's 'circles of community' - during times of need."  It allows your or a friend or family members to coordinate activities and manage volunteers to take care of tasks your family needs help with.  Your calendar and updates are private--only visible to people who have been invited to be part of your community of support.  People use it to schedule rides, meal delivery, child care, lawn care and so on.  It's a way to channel the energy of all those caring people who say "If there's anything I can do . . ." into practical help.

From the website:
"Lotsa Helping Hands was created to support family caregivers and volunteers by empowering their circles of community who are eager to help those in need.

Our mission is to provide the communication resources facilitating a world where caregivers feel empowered to ask for help, and in so doing, improve their own health and quality-of-life; volunteers can become part of the solution when family, friends, neighbors or colleagues are in need of help, and community becomes a recognized way to find meaning in both giving and receiving."

Think it might work for your family or for someone you care about?  Give it a try!

Prescott Family Foundation Grant received!

The Prescott Family Foundation of West Bend, WI has awarded Capital Candlelighters a General Operating Grant for 2010.  We are very grateful to receive this grant to sustain our programs and services for kids with cancer and their families.  The Prescott Family Foundation provides funding for basic medical research and supports a  number of service organizations in Washington and Dane counties.
Have a blessed, safe and healthy holiday season and a peaceful and happy new year!

Sincerely,

Anne Spurgeon
