Healthy and Ready to Work
Health care transition for young adults
Young adult cancer patients and cancer survivors face a unique developmental step. Unlike most young people, they already have a complex and detailed medical history, some of which may have happened when they were very young. After being accustomed to having a parent keep track of their past and present tests, treatments and medications, these young adults have to take over responsibility for their own medical care.
-They must learn the details of their own medical history and medical needs, and be able to explain them to caregivers
in their new home, workplace or college setting. -They have to learn to become their own appointment makers and their own advocates with medical personnel. -Many need to learn what their legal rights are in terms of access to
insurance, workplace or campus accommodations for a disability, and
medical privacy.
The AFCH social workers have excellent materials and advice to guide young adults and their parents smoothly through this transition. You can also find great resources online at the Healthy and Ready to Work website, http://www.hrtw.org/

Capital Candlelighters was founded nearly 30 years ago by parents of kids treated for cancer in Madison. We are now in our 10th year of expanded programs, providing educational, financial and transportation support to families and raising community awareness as well as offering social and emotional support.
It's an interesting time for many of us involved with Candlelighters, both personally and as an organization.
As in most areas of
life, our blessings and challenges seem to arrive hand in hand, and how
we greet the former (with gratitude and humility, we hope) and face the latter (with optimism and courage, we hope) is what defines our character.
--The difficult economy has made things tough financially over the last several months, but wonderful friends like the Maurice Rosefelt Memorial Fund and Deonne Salon and Day Spa have stepped up to make sure that childhood cancer families most in need are able to obtain car repairs, and pay for groceries, utilities and other basics to protect the health and safety of their kids who are undergoing cancer treatment. --We are making the transition to a new board president in October. We want to thank Mr. Jim Gilmore (dad to survivor James) for his many years of service in helping us to grow and build this organization. Jim is a passionate advocate for Capital Candlelighters and has helped to open many doors for us. Like any good leader he has trained and prepared the board well for the future, but we will miss him! [More about his successor, Jim Egle (dad to survivor Maria) soon!] --David and I just delivered our 12 year cancer survivor, Joseph, to his first semester in college. All the excitement left us unprepared for how awfully quiet our nest is feeling these days, but we are truly thankful to have reached this ordinary, completely miraculous day.
Capital Candlelighters supports the 250+ families of kids on treatment for cancer at AFCH because of the devoted support we receive from community members like YOU. THANK YOU for your ongoing commitment to these great children and their families, walking beside them at the most frightening time in their lives. May your blessings be rich and your challenges small.
Sincerely,
Anne Spurgeon Executive Director
