You Should Know . . .
*Adults who are treated for cancer can often go to their local community hospital. Kids have to travel to a regional pediatric oncology treatment center, often 1 to 3 hours from home, for clinic appointments, tests and hospitalizations.
*One in 330 kids will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 20. 46 are diagnosed in the US each day, nearly 13,000 each year.
*Childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer of children in the US.
*Capital Candlelighters provides financial assistance with expenses that, if left unmet, could compromise the health or safety of the child with cancer. The most common requests we receive are for help with paying utility bills (phone, electricity, home heating), rent or mortgage, car repairs and to buy groceries, gas and for co-pays on prescription medicines. *The most popular book we provide to families is "Educating the Child With Cancer," edited by Nancy Keene.

The beads we provide for kids at American Family Children's Hospital to collect and string into a record of their cancer treatment experiences are called "Hero Beads." Capital Candlelighters agrees with Christopher Reeve who once said, "I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."
It is our great honor
to know and support these amazing young people, some of whom are very,
very small, who fight so hard and yet smile so much. They are our heroes.
Sincerely,
Anne Spurgeon Executive Director

. . . because kids can't fight cancer alone!
