Capital Candlelighters' families and friends-

Greetings to all of you from the Capital Candlelighters' office!

We've been busy answering calls and emails from a growing number of families of kids on treatment for cancer who are struggling to manage household and medical expenses during these difficult financial times.  Please keep these great kids and families in your thoughts, and please consider taking part in the upcoming HBO Golf Classic (May 16th) and the 2009 Suzy's Run/Walk (Sep 27th).  These are our major annual fundraising events, and the proceeds help us to provide emergency support so we can relieve families of children and teens fighting cancer of some of their worries about paying for transportation to treatment, utilities, groceries or other basic expenses.

Our Peds Heme-Onc Hero Bead program is still going strong at the American Family Children's Hospital.  Remember, if you need to catch up on beads or would like to get started but your child has already been on treatment for a while, you are welcome to come by the Capital Candlelighters' office on Segoe Road and collect the cords and beads you need.  We also invite bereaved families to collect and string beads to document their child or teen's cancer journey.  Give us a call and schedule a time to come by.

New Article on Health Complications in Childhood Cancer Survivors

Many of us struggle to keep up with the evolving health information for childhood cancer survivors.  An excellent new article, researched and written by several of the foremost experts in the field, was published just this month in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.  You can find it in your local medical library or request a copy by email from anne@capcan.org.

Melissa M. Hudson, etal., "High-Risk Populations Identified in Childhood Cancer Survivor Study Investigations: Implications for Risk-Based Surveillance," J Clin Oncol 27, April 2009.

From the abstract:  "Childhood cancer survivors often experience complications related to cancer and its treatment that may adversely affect quality of life and increase the risk of premature death."  The article reviews data from over 10,000 participants in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS)  to help identify "childhood cancer survivor populations at high risk for
specific organ toxicity and secondary carcinogenesis and how this has informed clinical screening practices . . . CCSS investigations have characterized specific groups to be at highest risk of morbidity related to endocrine and reproductive dysfunction, pulmonary toxicity, cerebrovascular injury, neurologic and neurosensory sequelae, and subsequent neoplasms. Factors influencing risk for specific outcomes related to the individual survivor (eg, sex, race/ethnicity, age at diagnosis, attained age), sociodemographic status (eg, education, household income, health insurance) and cancer history (eg, diagnosis, treatment, time from diagnosis) have been consistently identified. These CCSS investigations that clarify risk for treatment complications related to specific treatment modalities, cumulative dose exposures, and sociodemographic factors identify profiles of survivors at high risk for cancer-related morbidity who deserve heightened surveillance to optimize outcomes after treatment for childhood cancer."
