Capital Candlelighters' families and friends-

It's shaping up to be a busy year for us.  Rough financial times have hit some of our childhood cancer families pretty hard, and we're doing our best to keep up with financial assistance.  We covered car repairs for five families in the month of February alone!  So many kids treated in Madison have to travel long distances pretty frequently, and it's essential for them to have a working, safe car so they can get to tests and treatments.

We're excited to have Suzy's Run/Walk 2009 scheduled!  It will be on the last Sunday of September this year, as a fitting windup for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  We hold a very competitive 5K and 10K run and a fun and inspiring 5 K walk.  Mark your calendar for September 27th at Vilas Park!

New COG Survivorship Guidelines

The Children's Oncology Group has posted new long-term follow-up guidelines for survivors of childhood cancer at their web site:

Survivors and their parents should examine these guidelines and know the latest COG follow-up recommendations for your treatment regimen. (If you don't know the exact dosages of radiation or individual chemotherapy drugs you had, you should ask for the information from your pediatric oncology records).  Make sure your primary care provider also has a copy of these follow-up guidelines in your current medical file.

Regular tests and exams can keep your health on track - yearly follow-up care is critical for our survivor population.
These guidelines are based on the most current scientific data on the potential late effects of the aggressive treatments used on childhood cancer patients, and are the guidelines followed by the Caring For Life Survivorship Clinic at AFCH.

At www.survivorshipguidelines.org you'll also find updated individual health links covering specific medical conditions, emotional and educational issues and tips on reducing the risks of second cancers.

MILLION PENNY DRIVE  -  MARCH 1 - 31, 2009
Using Small Change to Make a Big Change
For Local Kids With Cancer!
Pile of Pennies
For the month of March, we're trying once again to collect the equivalent of one million pennies to help kids with cancer.  It's easy and fun!   A Million Pennies = $10,000.  Participants can collect funds for any length of time during March.  Some schools and companies do it as a "Penny Wars" competition between classrooms or departments, others just put out jars and ask customers, students, church members, etc. for help.  We can provide posters, jars or milk jug labels, incentive prizes and more!  We'll be happy to answer any questions you have, just call 608-231-8006 or email [email protected].
