Greetings Capital Candlelighters' families and friends!
I moved to Wisconsin as a young adult, and was shocked to discover that
what my teachers in Missouri had taught me was wrong. Up here,
February is the LONGEST month (July seems to be the shortest--it goes by in a few days!) I hope
you have lots of opportunities to brighten up this long month and have some fun
with your nearest and dearest.
Patients, survivors and their families are encouraged to join us for a bounce to welcome the beginning of spring at our annual Spring Party on March
21st (see the article in the left column).
We continue to be blessed with contributions that allow us to provide emergency
financial assistance to families of children currently on treatment for
cancer. Those of you who hold a fundraiser or write a check or donate a
gas card--please know that we treasure your kindness to these wonderful kids
who are fighting the battle of a lifetime. You make sure that heating
bills are paid, car repairs are completed, rent is covered and groceries are in
the cupboard when parents have to miss work to care for their children. We don't have enough words to thank you.

How to Spot Fake Cancer Cures
Most of us parenting a child with cancer have been approached by someone offering a product or procedure to "cure" the cancer. Some of these can be nutritional supplements (like the young woman at the gymnastics studio who saw Joseph's bald head and asked if I'd heard about the amazing vitamins that could rid the body of cancer. It just so happened that she was a distributor of these incredible products). Others come in the form of electrical or magnetic devices, unapproved 'medicines' or even entire 'clinics' promoted on web sites or through DVDs. Some of these claim to be a sure cure, which is why "doctors don't want you to know about them!" They profit from the fear and desperation of patients and their families, and they aren't subject to any scientific testing or oversight. Some may be harmless, but others, even labeled as "natural" or "organic" may be very dangerous, since there is no regulation of their purity or potency.
The Food and Drug Administration has recently added to its list of "187 Fake 'Cancer Cures' Consumers Should Avoid." The full list of companies is here. For further help in assessing a potential treatment, the Federal Trade Commission has a web site called "Cure-ious?"If you find something that you think might be beneficial to your child or teen, either to fight the cancer or to relieve symptoms caused by an aggressive treatment protocol, bring it to your nurse practitioner or your oncologist when you come to clinic. They will not think worse of you for looking into treatment options on your own, and they can help you decide if this is something safe and worthwhile. Even innocuous-looking items like vitamins or herbs can interfere with the current treatments or make symptoms worse, so it's important to work as a team with your child's doctor. There are valuable and helpful complementary practices your child can take part in to relieve stress and feel better. You can bring the UW Integrative Medicine program into your treatment team to help you find techniques that work with the treatment plan to ease pain, lessen nausea and perhaps strengthen the immune system.
