Ho Ho Ho!  We had RSVPs from 113 children for this year's holiday party, and hosted 180 guests at our Dec. 13th winter wonderland! A
generous surprise donation from the MTH Foundation allowed Santa to provide a personally chosen gift for every child and teen. To see

Hi Capital Candlelighters' families and friends!

Is it really 2009 already?  Anybody else still trying to write 19xx on their checks?  Where does the time go??

Our annual Holiday Party at the Lussier Family Heritage Center on December 13th was a wonderful time for kids with cancer and their family members to play games, do crafts, eat goodies, meet Santa and lighten their burdens among one another.  Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who made the day possible, including coordinator Dawn Grelle, the hardworking Bakk Family, several AFCH staffers and our student elves from Oregon and Madison West High Schools.

Plans are underway for our Spring Party, and we'll have a date, time and place for you soon.  In the meantime, stay warm, enjoy your loved ones and count every one of your blessings every day!

Helping Children Who Are Experiencing Grief

Unlike previous generations, today's parents are often  inexperienced in helping their children deal with the loss of another child, whether a classmate, family member or friend. In an age when most traditional childhood diseases have been controlled by vaccines and antibiotics, childhood cancer has become the most common disease killer of children in the developed world.

Those of us who have a child with cancer find that we sometimes have to parent our children through the sad experience of losing a friend they have come to know through the hospital, in clinic or at support groups.  Some of us may have to help our children cope with the loss of a beloved sibling while living through our own grief.

There are several excellent books available for kids from toddlers to teens, and others written to advise and guide their parents.  You can sometimes find local support groups for grieving children through hospice.  We've collected links to a few good websites that include articles on helping children understand and deal with loss and that list and evaluate the best books on the subject.

MILLION PENNY DRIVE  -  MARCH 1 - 31, 2009
Using Small Change to Make a Big Change
For Local Kids With Cancer!

If your school, workplace or community group would like to take part in this year's Million Penny Drive, we'd love to get them on the list as soon as possible.  It's easy and fun!  A Million Pennies = $10,000, which would help provide a lot of gas cards, groceries, utility assistance and car repairs for families in need.  Participants can collect funds for any length of time during March.  Some schools and companies do it as a "Penny Wars" competition between classrooms or departments, others just put out jars and ask customers, students, church members, etc. for help.  We can provide posters, jars or milk jug labels, incentive prizes and more!  We'll be happy to answer any questions you have, just call 608-231-8006 or email anne@capcan.org.

As we move into the new year, we renew our pledge to provide the best possible emotional, educational and emergency financial support for the families of children treated for cancer in our area.   Please join us in doing all you can to make life a little easier for these great families.

Have a happy, healthy and safe 2009!!
Sincerely,

Anne Spurgeon
