Guatemala Update on Flooding & Volcano eruption.

Greetings to everyone. It is amazing how much can happen in one week. On Friday, May 28th a volcano erupted near Guatemala City killing several people, destroying an entire village, causing the evacuation of two other villages and bringing a city of 3 million to a complete stand still. Four inches of thick, sand-like ash fell throughout the region causing the shutdown of the main airport and closures of schools and businesses. Thankfully it did not affect Fe Viva or our base, but it did affect many of our partners we minister with in Guatemala. It's quite an ordeal for many thousands of people and will continue to be for some time.

Right on the heels of the eruption was Tropical Storm Agatha - that dropped three feet of rain in four days in many parts of Guatemala. As of June 1, close to 200,000 people have had to flee from their homes, dozens of bridges are destroyed, hundreds are dead and many, many homes are destroyed or damaged.

The Guatemalan government is doing what it can to provide shelter to these precious people, opening schools and centres for families to sleep and congregate. The government simply cannot provide enough aide for the displaced people. This is where the missionary community comes in. It is awesome to see the love of Christ in action. The moment there was opportunity to get out and help, the Fe Viva missionaries, staff and the children in our children's home, were out distributing dry clothing, toys and sharing the love of Christ to those who needed it. Below is an email we received from Steve Peters, director of Casa Esperanza and Fe Viva administrator.

Tropical Storm Agatha and Pacaya Volcano Eruption

Dengue Virus, Volcano Pacaya erupting, Tropical Storm, Mud slides...  BUT God is in control. The President of Guatemala has declared a red zone alert (STATE OF EMERGENCY) for the country, which means things are bad and may get worse...so be prepared. The international airport was closed until June 2, schools are ordered closed until further notice, bridges and roads are being washed away by flash floods.

The main highway and only route to El Salvador is also closed due to a collapse of one of the main bridges near here. Sounds like we are also cut off from supplies getting through to our region from the City and another storm is on its way.

Our family did make it back just in time for the Volcano eruption from our trip from Mexico (mandatory 6 month passport renewal). We are only a 1 hour drive from the base of the Paycaya Volcano which we have hiked numerous of times. Over the years this volcano has been quite a tourist attraction. Apparently all the buildings that were higher up have now been destroyed. Guatemala City was also covered with black sand/ash as we drove through. It was kind of neat seeing black sand being shoveled in small piles everywhere...kinda like back home in Canada, but with snow. Unfortunately people have died and/or been injured and numerous homes have been lost by fire and/or flash floods.

Second E-mail received from Steve on Monday, May 31.

Hi Kim & Lynn.

Things are pretty crazy around here. Chiquimulilla & Guazacapan are starting to get the overflow of families who have either lost their homes or temporarily can`t return due to flooding...many people are stranded. I didn`t realize how bad things were until we dropped into one of the emergency centers in Chiquimulilla. There were 200 families presently there with only the clothes on their backs. Most of their clothes were also wet, because they are still wearing them and it is still very humid and raining.

I took 2 bales of each women`s, men`s, children`s, youth & babies clothing to this Center. I took a couple of tia`s and a dozen older Casa girls to help. We also handed out stuffies (2 boxes) and Jesus tracts, and had opportunities to talk, sing and pray. There were many, many children who were so thrilled to get something...a little joy in the midst of chaos.

More of our Casa Kids want to participate. We plan on going again this Wednesday. We are planning dramas, worship and ministry prayer for those who want it. I feel so blessed that they initiated this and have a desire to show God's love. Please pray for His Love and Presence and we step out with our kids.

This center is expecting more and more families this week with other Centers opening up. We still have a lot of clothing in storage.  We will hand out these items in stages and different days to various Centers.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Not only Fe Viva, but so many other Mission groups are on the scene immediately to do serve in the name of Jesus Christ. Even the government has come to rely on the Body of Christ and the Missionary groups to provide shelter, food, clothing, etc., in times of emergency. This reflects so wonderfully on those who have sent these men and women into the world to shine for Jesus and fulfill the mandate of the Great Commission.

Please pray for the families affected and the Missionaries on the ground working tirelessly to help those in need.  Fe Viva endeavors to do all it can to help and to share the love of Christ. If you want to help, please contact us at info@feviva.org.

Thank you for your prayers and support.
