Life as Play
by Rev. Ken
There is a great scene in the movie, Amistad, where a group of abolitionists come to cheer up a jail cell full of Africans who have been rescued from a sinking slave ship. The abolitionists put their best foot forward by singing religious songs which totally confuse the captives.
"What are they doing?" the Africans ask.
"Singing songs that praise God," comes the answer.
"Then why do they look like they're in such pain," the captives wonder to themselves.
Isn't it strange that we would have ever thought that religious celebrations should ever be anything but joyful? And of course, if we can't enjoy a religious service we can't enjoy life.
Florence Scovel Shinn wrote in her book, The Game of Life (And How to Play It), that most people think of life as a battle when it is really a game - a great game of giving and receiving.
Whatever we send out in our actions or words will return to us in full measure. That which we think about and give power to, through our emotions, will show up as our life experience.
Shinn wrote, "If a man gives hate, he will receive hate; if he gives love, he will receive love; if he gives criticism, he will receive criticism; if he lies he will be lied to; if he cheats he will be cheated."
To play our game of life successfully, we must allow ourselves to use our imagination to see ourselves enjoying life. By consciously choosing imagery of wealth, health and joy we are raising the level of vibration of our thoughts to a higher degree. It is in this conscious choosing that we are empowering ourselves to open an avenue through which we can glance at that which is called Heaven.
