Love at a Cross Walk

by Rev. Ken

It's always difficult for me to get back into my normal routine after a vacation.

I'm been thinking about an experience I had a couple of years ago returning from a weekend trip to Charleston which had cost me double my expected expenses, when my car decided to blow a gasket on the return home.

While I was gone on my mini-vacation, both the washer and refrigerator at home decided to go on strike; and best of all, I found, waiting for me, a letter from my friends at the IRS.

I would have kicked Ernest Holmes in the shins if I could have gotten to him.

Adding to my frustrations was an early morning errand that that took me out of my normal routine. Stuck in school traffic at the neighborhood elementary school, I was fuming; but then I saw something that changed my whole outlook.

The traffic was being held up by the crossing guard of the school. On the side of the street was a little Asian boy. He looked to be in the second or third grade. He wore glasses that were way too big for him, and he was carrying a backpack at least as heavy as he was. He was holding a paper in one hand. His mother stood behind him. It was obvious that they were waiting to show something to the crossing guard.

When the guard got to the curb, she bent down to see what the little boy was trying to show her. Whatever was on the paper must have been something really good and hard-worked-for, because after examining it the crossing guard lady hugged the little boy with all her might.

Now here's the thing: standing behind the two of them, the mom was beaming with pride and love.

The crossing guard lady got up that morning, probably with as many frustrations as I had endured, if not more. But she refused to allow her problems to cloud her possibilities. She made a difference, not only for a little kid and his mother, but also for an angry driver stuck in traffic.

When we live with our hearts set on the love mode, we open a world of miracles that can solve any problem from a blown gasket, to a letter from the IRS or even the aspirations of a second grader with glasses far too big and a Mom full of hope.

Landing On Mars

This week our space probe Curiosity landed on Mars.

Curiosity represents a scientific and engineering leap over the previous rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, and its nuclear-powered battery will allow it to rove day and night. Over the course of its two-year initial mission, the probe will climb up a 3-mile-high mountain in the middle of Gale Crater, poking, prodding, and drilling into the soil and rocks. ... Possibly the coolest Curiosity instrument is the ChemCam, which uses a laser beam to shoot rocks (and maybe a Martian or two) in order to vaporize a small sample. A spectrograph will then analyze the vapor, determining the composition and chemistry of the rocks. Situated on Curiosity's head, ChemCam can shoot up to 23 feet and should provide unprecedented detail about minerals on the Martian surface.
