After School Upgrade!

................................

It may seem early, but we just want to give you a heads up! Keep an eye out for Westland's fanstastic new after-school programming. Courtesy of fleX Academies, Westland is poised to offer an amazing array of after school offerings next year - from field hockey to finance; homework to hoops...tennis to theatre...you get the idea!

We took all your survey suggestions and are in the process of making them into reality. Registration will be on-line and will start this summer - discounts availble for early registration.

More info to follow!

Wow. My last Wildcat Wire ever! Hard to believe. Westland has been a wonderful place for my family and for me over the past 5 years. It is a fantastic community and I will very much miss being part of it on a daily basis. My youngest is ready to move on to B-CC, but I'm dragging my feet!

Anyway, I can't thank everyone enough for your  kindness over these years. You have been great. We have an outstanding PTA board in place to carry on next year, and I hope you will continue to give them your support and enthusiasm. They are excited about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, as you all should be.

As for me, I will still be lurking around. I've agreed to help make sure the new after-school program gets up and running. It's such an exciting new program and I want to help make the transition as seamless as possible. In this regard, I want to thank Missy Reingruber and Landis Fisher for all their efforts this year. Running this program is like running a small business, and they hung in there valiantly all year.
I'm also hoping to work with the B-CC Foundation next year - it's a group that would enable me to mesh my school contacts with my community work, and would offer a new set of challenges.

Before I head out the door, however, I'm not quite through with that brick campaign. It was a dagger in my heart to see that no one had ordered anything on line since Wednesday evening! I know everyone is very busy and focusing on summer, but please, if you'd like to support this campaign, do so soon. The current tally is 81 bricks sold. But we have a long way to go to reach our target of 250 bricks (169 bricks to be exact!). Ordering instructions are below. Please, go ahead and  order today so that your brick will be part of the new sidewalk to be installed over the summer.

And, of course, we can't forget there's one more meal to go - the staff lunch on Thursday, June 16th. It's our way of sending our teachers and staff into the summer on a full stomach! If you can help (and we do need your help!), please contact Carole Klein.

Thank you all, for everything.

8th Grade Parents - Promotion Ceremony This Week!
For 8th graders, it's the last week at Westland!

The 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony is on Wednesday, June 15th from 7-8pm at B-CC. There is no charge, although 8th grade families are asked to donate bottles of water for the post-ceremony reception. Cookies will be provided! Four tickets have been mailed to each 8th grade family  - 2 tickets for the gym and 2 for the auditorium. Don't lose these tickets - they cannot be replaced! Guests will not be admitted without a ticket!

Here's the lowdown on the seating: those seated in the gym will see the event live, but there is no air conditioning and the seating is on bleachers. Those seated in the auditorium will watch a live broadcast of the ceremony, seated in comfortable chairs and in air conditioning. A reception for students, guests, and staff follows the ceremony in the B-CC cafeteria.

Many thanks to 8th grade sponsor Michelle Lawthers, and PTA 8th grade VPs Ari Antonelli and Pooh Shapiro and 7th grade VPs Susan Teplitz and Laurie Rosen, all of whom have devoted much time and effort to organizing last week's dance and the upcoming promotion festivities.

Say it in Stone (or Brick)!
Engraved Bricks ExampleAs the school year draws to a close (ahem, 8th grade parents, are you reading??), now is the perfect time to think about memorializing your child's years at Westland. Or perhaps you'd like to recognize a special teacher or staff member. Or just celebrate your family's connection to Westland.

Whatever you'd like to say, you can now say it forever by purchasing a
Westland brick. For just $50, you get 3 lines of text (21 characters per line) on a brick that will be laid in a new walkway in front of the school.

This new PTA campaign not only beautifies the front of the school (no more
dirt/mud paths!), but also raises much needed funds to underwrite technology
purchases. Westland will have at least two new portable classrooms next year
and Mr. Vogelman wants to ensure that those classrooms have the same
technology capabilities (ie Promethean Boards), as do our permanent
classrooms. These boards cost approximately $6,000 EACH.

Our goal is to sell at least 250 bricks by June 15 (we extended the date!). With over 1,000 students, we're hoping that will be a cake walk - or a brick walk, as the case may be! We'd really rather sell 500 so we can buy two new Promethean Boards.

You can find all the information you need to order your brick(s) at
http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/westlandms/about/WMSBricks.aspx
or just go to Westland's homepage and click on the link under "News".
