Thanks to all who attended last week's final PTA meeting of the year! The PTA now has a fantastic set of officers in place for the 2011/12 school year and a realistic operating budget as well.

I just want to highlight a couple of big ticket budget items. This year, PTA funds enabled Westland to overhaul and maintain its new school website, and also to purchase a new mobile computer cart that allows teachers to bring technology to the classroom. For next year, (assuming a successful brick campaign!) PTA funds will underwrite the purchase of  Promethean boards for the two new portable classrooms. I want to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude for the generosity of the Westland parent community for making all this possible - you are the best!

And speaking of that brick campaign...the current tally is 64 bricks sold and over $3,000 raised. But we have a long way to go to reach our target of 250 bricks (186 bricks to be exact!). Ordering instructions are below. Please, go ahead and  order today so that your brick will be part of the new sidewalk to be installed over the summer.

Many thanks to 6th grade VP's Karen Lippold and Shelagh Meehan for coordinating food & drink donations for yesterday's final staff meeting of the year. Just one more meal to go - the staff lunch on Thursday, June 16th. It's our way of sending our teachers and staff into the summer on a full stomach! If you can help, please contact Carole Klein.

We're in the home stretch here as the school year draws to a close. It's a somewhat bittersweet time for all as we prepare to say goodbyes, but exciting as well as the prospect of summer and new adventures looms large!

8th Grade Parents - What You Need to Know!
For 8th graders, a couple of special events mark the end of their time at Westland...and here's the scoop!

First, the 8th Grade Dance on Friday, June 10th from 7-10pm at the Coffield Center (2450 Lyttonsville Road, Silver Spring). Ticket will be sold for $15 at lunch this week  - NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR! Ticket price includes admission and a photo key chain. Only Westland students may attend - no guests. Appropriate dress is required - no bare midriffs or mini-dresses. Shirt and slacks are recommended for boys and semi-formal dress for girls. Please note, this is not a prom! Students must arrive not later than 8:00pm.

Second, the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony on Wednesday, June 15th from 7-8pm at B-CC. There is no charge, although families are asked to donate bottles of water for the post-ceremony reception. Cookies will be provided! Four tickets have been mailed to each 8th grade family  - 2 tickets for the gym and 2 for the auditorium. Don't lose these tickets - they cannot be replaced! Guests will not be admitted without a ticket! Here's the lowdown on the seating: those seated in the gym will see the event live, but there is no air conditioning and the seating is on bleachers. Those seated in the auditorium will watch a live broadcast of the ceremony, seated in comfortable chairs and in air conditioning. A reception for students, guests, and staff follows the ceremony in the B-CC cafeteria.

Many thanks to 8th grade sponsor Michelle Lawthers, and PTA VPs Ari Antonelli and Pooh Shapiro, all of whom have  been hard at work organizing these great events! Any questions should be directed to them.
Say it in Stone (or Brick)!
Engraved Bricks ExampleAs the school year draws to a close (ahem, 8th grade parents, are you reading??), now is the perfect time to think about memorializing your child's years at Westland. Or perhaps you'd like to recognize a special teacher or staff member. Or just celebrate your family's connection to Westland.

Whatever you'd like to say, you can now say it forever by purchasing a
Westland brick. For just $50, you get 3 lines of text on a brick that will
be laid in a new walkway in front of the school.

This new PTA campaign not only beautifies the front of the school (no more
dirt/mud paths!), but also raises much needed funds to underwrite technology
purchases. Westland will have at least two new portable classrooms next year
and Mr. Vogelman wants to ensure that those classrooms have the same
technology capabilities (ie Promethean Boards), as do our permanent
classrooms. These boards cost approximately $6,000 EACH.

Our goal is to sell at least 250 bricks by June 15 (we extended the date!). With over 1,000 students, we're hoping that will be a cake walk - or a brick walk, as the case may be! We'd really rather sell 500 so we can buy two new Promethean Boards.

You can find all the information you need to order your brick(s) at

or just go to Westland's homepage and click on the link under "News".

Yearbooks Are In and Being Handed Out!
Yearbook2010/11 yearbooks are being distributed this week during lunch periods. Pre-ordered books were distributed Monday and Tuesday. Students who did not pre-order will have an opportunity to purchase yearbooks at lunches Wednesday and Thursday. Quantities are limited, so if you want to purchase one, your best bet is to send $40 cash or check payable to Westland MS with your child on Wednesday. Many thanks to Westland's yearbook advisor, Ms. Norka Ratnavale, as well as to the following parent volunteers who helped with distribution and sales -Maria Helena Maldonado-Villar, Barbara Zylinski, Dorene Carey, Julie Sorenson, Nina Eisenberg, Tiffany Leeson, Rodica Ursu, Smitha Gollamudi, Eileen Sherman, and Irene Rodriguez.
