Hope everyone had a relaxing Memorial Day holiday and comes back energized to finish out the school year! There's a lot going on, starting with the final PTA General Meeting of the year on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 7pm in the Media Center. I know it's a busy time of year, but I hope you'll try to make it. We will take care of some PTA business - elect next year's officers, approve next year's budget - and hear a quick update from Westland counselor Jessica Nachman about wrapping up this year, and what's in store for next year. Then, we are delighted to welcome pyschologist Pamela Forman to speak about "Creating a Close Knit Family in a Fast Spinning World." It's a timely topic, as well all prepare to spin into summer! Her presentation will begin at approximately 7:30pm.

Our engraved brick campaign is coming along nicely. We've sold almost 50 bricks and raised over $2,000. But we have a long way to go to reach our target of 250 bricks - so if you've been putting it off, now's the time to act! Ordering instructions are below.

As those of you with students at B-CC are aware, some months ago, B-CC PTSA recently revised the guidelines applicable to BCCNET, the high school equivalent of Westland-net in an effort to refocus BCCNET on school- and education-related issues. Westland's PTA Executive Board has followed the changes closely, and recently voted to revamp the guidelines applicable to Westland-net to parallel the new B-CC guidelines. When created, Westland-net was patterned after BCCNET and the two listserves have traditionally operated under similar rules. The new guidelines are posted on the Westland website and will take effect June 16, 2011!

New guidelines are just one of many changes that will be taking place next year. I'm very excited about the slate of candidates for PTA leadership roles, but I can tell you, they will need YOUR help! Please, consider how you'd like to get involved in what will be a fantastic year of new faces and new ideas.

8th Grade Parents - What You Need to Know!
For 8th graders, a couple of special events mark the end of their time at Westland...and here's the scoop!

First, the 8th Grade Dance on Friday, June 10th from 7-10pm at the Coffield Center (2450 Lyttonsville Road, Silver Spring). Ticket will be sold for $15 at lunch the week of June 7-10 - NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR! Ticket price includes admission and a photo key chain. Only Westland students may attend - no guests. Appropriate dress is required - no bare midriffs or mini-dresses. Shirt and slacks are recommended for boys and semi-formal dress for girls. Please note, this is not a prom! Students must arrive not later than 8:00pm.

Second, the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony on Wednesday, June 15th from 7-8pm at B-CC. There is no charge, although families are asked to donate bottles of water for the post-ceremony reception. Cookies will be provided! Four tickets have been mailed to each 8th grade family  - 2 tickets for the gym and 2 for the auditorium. Don't lose these tickets - they cannot be replaced! Guests will not be admitted without a ticket! Here's the lowdown on the seating: those seated in the gym will see the event live, but there is no air conditioning and the seating is on bleachers. Those seated in the auditorium will watch a live broadcast of the ceremony, seated in comfortable chairs and in air conditioning. A reception for students, guests, and staff follows the ceremony in the B-CC cafeteria.

Many thanks to 8th grade sponsor Michelle Lawthers, and PTA VPs Ari Antonelli and Pooh Shapiro, all of whom have  been hard at work organizing these great events! Any questions should be directed to them.
Say it in Stone (or Brick)!
Engraved Bricks ExampleAs the school year draws to a close (ahem, 8th grade parents, are you reading??), now is the perfect time to think about memorializing your child's years at Westland. Or perhaps you'd like to recognize a special teacher or staff member. Or just celebrate your family's connection to Westland.

Whatever you'd like to say, you can now say it forever by purchasing a
Westland brick. For just $50, you get 3 lines of text on a brick that will
be laid in a new walkway in front of the school.

This new PTA campaign not only beautifies the front of the school (no more
dirt/mud paths!), but also raises much needed funds to underwrite technology
purchases. Westland will have at least two new portable classrooms next year
and Mr. Vogelman wants to ensure that those classrooms have the same
technology capabilities (ie Promethean Boards), as do our permanent
classrooms. These boards cost approximately $6,000 EACH.

Our goal is to sell at least 250 bricks by June 15 (we extended the date!). With over 1,000 students, we're hoping that will be a cake walk - or a brick walk, as the case may be! We'd really rather sell 500 so we can buy two new Promethean Boards.

You can find all the information you need to order your brick(s) at
http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/westlandms/about/WMSBricks.aspx
or just go to Westland's homepage and click on the link under "News".

Any questions, please contact Alysa Emden.
