Out in the Silence
....................................
On Wednesday, May 4th, the Westland PTA joins with the B-CC PTSA to sponsor a free community screening of OUT IN THE SILENCE, a film that captures the remarkable chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson's wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown.
Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson's journey dramatically illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it.
The film will be shown at the B-CC auditorium beginning at 7:00pm.
The screening will be followed by a Q & A session with filmmakers Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer.

Many, many thanks to all who contributed so much to make Friday's Cultural Arts Cocktail Party/Fundraiser such a success. As you will read below, it really was an amazing team effort by so many people. I hope everyone had a great time and that Shelagh & Jordan have recovered from having such a houseful of people!
Everyone is now focused on spring break - and rightfully so. But there's much in store when we get back. The Shakespeare residency starts April 17th, the screening of "Out in the Silence" is May 4th, and the Bookfair runs from May 9-13th. So rest up!
For me, spring break is an opportunity to get ready for my final few months at Westland. Hard to believe. But I ask all of you to use the time to give some thought to how you want to be involved next year.
There are so many options - from PTA board postions, to chairing an event, to working at the school store. Please don't hestitate to contact me if you'd like to throw your name in the hat or claim that special job you've been eyeing. My e-mail is alysa@comcast.net and the nominating committee (Pooh Shapiro, Pattie Koh Friedman, and me) would love to hear from you.

Wow - What a Party!!!
Despite a somewhat lackluster start start on rsvp's, the PTA Cultural Arts Cocktail Party/Fundraiser last Friday evening finished strong! It was a resounding success on every front - over 100 people attended; we raised over $4,500 to help underwrite great cultural arts programming, and everyone had a great time!
Much work went into the event and many thanks are due. To Shelagh Meehan & Jordan Smyth for hosting the party at their home. To Beth Pincus for designing the invitation. To Pattie Koh Friedman, Heidi Dupler, Wendy Feldman Block, Nadia Abourisk-Asaad & Marina Burrows for soliciting donations of wonderful food. To Ridgewell's Catering, La Madeleine, Bistro LaZeez, the Hyatt Catering, Mia's, Raku, Tako Grill, Breads Unlimited, and Stella's Bakery for responding so generously to those requests! To Patty Craver for coordinating donations of wine and beer, and to Pamela Baker-Masson, Nadia Abourizk-Asaad, Susan Glickman Bobeck, Melissa Urofsky, Mafida Siddique, Carole Klein, Julie Raffensperger, Wendy Block, Iona Klayman, Karen Dubrow, Laurie Rosen, Joyce Rechtshaffen, Leslie Shampaine & Susan Gutenberg for donating so generously! To Pamela Baker-Masson, Nadia Abourizk-Asaad, Marina Burrows, Shelagh Meehan (& probably many others!) who worked throughout the evening to keep the food and drink flowing. To Westland students Annie McElvein (flute) & Aislinn Olthoff (violin) for the wonderful live music. To Westland English dept. chair, Ashton Palmer, for the wonderful video, and all her work in coordinating this year's Shakespeare residency.
And most of all, thanks to all who came to the party and/or sent in donations! Your support and enthusiasm make it possible for the PTA to underwrite programs of such high quality. This year's Shakespeare residency begins just after spring break, on April 27th, and I encourage you to ask your kids about it, or even better, drop by the school and see the students and actors in action. They fill the hallways hourly, and it's a wonderful sight!
If you haven't yet had a chance to make your donation to support this amazing programming, it's not too late. You can either make an on-line donation through www.pay4schoolstuffonline.com or you can mail a check payable to "Westland PTA" to Alysa Emden, 5216 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, MD 20814.
Thanks so much to everyone who made this evening possible. It was, as always, a pleasure, and I thank you all. |

New BCCcommunity Listserve Established!
As part of a continuing effort to streamline B-CCnet (B-CC high school's parent listserve), a new community listserve has been established - BCCcommunity. B-CCnet is now a moderated list serve limited to postings directly related to B-CC.
Westland-net does not suffer from quite the overwhelming volume of off topic (or OT) messages that were inundating B-CCnet. However, to make sure it stays that way, please join BCCcommunity and post all off-topic messages there instead of posting them on Westland-net!!!You'll reach a wider audience, and can help us avoid switching to a moderated list serve.
Over 500 people have already subscribed to BCCcommunity, and it is fast becoming an effective on-line marketplace, both for those seeking and those offering items and recommendations. The more people who join, the more effective it will become!
To sign-up for BCCcommunity, just send an email with your full name to: BCCcommunity-subscribe@yahoogroups.com You will get an automated message back asking you to confirm that you want to join the group. Please look for this message and reply to it. Your request won't go through unless you do. And, if you haven't heard from the BCCcommunity group within 24 hours, please let moderator Sarah Morse know and she will add you. (The system is not 100% perfect.)
