Out in the Silence

....................................
On Wednesday, May 4th, the Westland PTA joins with the B-CC PTSA to sponsor a free community screening of OUT IN THE SILENCE, a film that captures the remarkable chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson's wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown.

Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson's journey dramatically illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it.

The film will be shown at the B-CC auditorium beginning at 7:00pm.

The screening will be followed by a Q & A  session with filmmakers Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer.

Click here for more information about the film.

Well, I'm a little late on this one, but it's still Monday! And being late means I can thank 8th grade VP's Ari Antonelli and Pooh Shapiro for organizing donations for this afternoon's staff meeting, and also thank all those who so generously donated food! It's tough to have a staff meeting when it's 80 degrees and beautiful outside, but a delicious spread of food eases the pain quite a bit!

Many after school programs start this week. We've been able to meet the minimum enrollment for most, but have had to cancel a few. At the same time we're getting the spring program up and running, we're working on devising a whole  new system for after school programs next year. It promises to be great and will hopefully eliminate many of the headaches of the current system. Look for more information shortly!

The annual Cultural Arts Cocktail Party & Fundraiser is THIS FRIDAY , April 8th. See story below for more details, but it promises to be a great spring evening out - lots of fun, and for a great cause too. But the more people who attend, the more fun it will be, so send in your rsvp today!

Finallly, it's time to start thinking about next year. For the 8th graders, this means a field trip to B-CC on April 13th and 14th. See sidebar for permission slip. For me, it means finding new folks to be involved with the Westland PTA! There are so many options - from PTA board postions, to chairing an event, to working at the school store...I'll be sending out more information on various options shortly, but please don't hestitate to contact me if you'd like to throw your name in the hat or claim that special job you've been eyeing. My e-mail is alysa@comcast.net and the nominating committee (Pooh Shapiro, Pattie Koh Friedman, and me) would love to hear from you.

After-School Registration Update!
After School ActivitiesThe spring after-school session starts Tuesday April 5th. Due to low participation, we've had to cancel Photoworks, and may have to cancel Babysitting Essentials and Cooking. You still have a couple more days to register for those classes, so please do so!

All the other classes look good to go, and you should receive a confirmation e-mail shortly before the start of the class.

Just click here to check out all our great spring programming! Follow the simple registration instructions for the classes that are still open, and you're all set.

The PTA is throwing a wonderful party on Friday, April 8th from 6:30-9:30 at the home of Shelagh Meehan & Jordan Smyth to support Westland's cultural arts programming. The food and drink promises to be fantastic, and the company will be as well! Principal Danny Vogelman will be there, as will all the members of Westland's administrative team and hopefully many teachers and staff.

By way of background, one of the highlights of the spring semester is the two-week-long Shakespeare residency in which every student gets to participate.  Underwriting the residency is one of the PTA's single biggest budget expeditures. It's a great bargain at just under $13 per student, but that still comes to $13,000.

To rsvp and/or make a donation, just click here to head to Westland's webpage. Click on the link under "News". You can either register and pay on-line, or you can print out the rsvp form and mail it back, together with a check. Whichever option you choose, please do it today - we really hope to see you there, and really need your support!
Order Your Yearbook Today!

YearbookWestland switched to a new yearbook publication company this year, and all orders must be placed on-line! To reserve your copy today, just click here and follow the ordering instructions. If you have any questions, please contact yearbook advisor Norka Padilla Ratnavale.

10th Grade MYP Projects on Exhibit!

The MYP Personal Project Exhibition, the culmination of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (grades 6-10) will take place on Thursday, April 7th, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at B-CC. The community is welcome and encouraged to attend. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the great work the 10th grade students have completed during this year. And a chance to gather ideas for what your own student might do in a couple of years!

Thursday is also generally a fun night to be at B-CC! Come early and enjoy a bowl of soup for the DC Central Kitchen for $15 (you keep the ceramic bowls provided by the BCC Empty Bowls Club). At 7pm there will be a student led production of Romeo and Juliet. Tickets are $10 at the door or can be ordered online.

New BCCcommunity Listserve Established!

As part of a continuing effort to streamline B-CCnet (B-CC high school's parent listserve), a new community listserve has been established - BCCcommunity. B-CCnet is now a moderated list serve limited to postings directly related to B-CC.

Westland-net does not suffer from quite the overwhelming volume of
off topic (or OT) messages that were inundating B-CCnet. However, to make sure it stays that way, please join BCCcommunity and post all off-topic messages there instead of posting them on Westland-net!!!You'll reach a wider audience, and can help us avoid switching to a moderated list serve.

Over 500 people have already subscribed to BCCcommunity, and it is fast becoming an effective on-line marketplace, both for those seeking and those offering items and recommendations. The more people who join, the more effective it will become!

To sign-up for BCCcommunity, just send an email with your full name to: BCCcommunity-subscribe@yahoogroups.com You will get an
automated message back asking you to confirm that you want to join the group. Please look for this message and reply to it. Your request won't go through unless you do. And, if you haven't heard from the BCCcommunity group within 24 hours, please let moderator Sarah Morse know and she will add you. (The system is not 100% perfect.)
