Out in the Silence

....................................
On Wednesday, May 4th, the Westland PTA joins with the B-CC PTSA to sponsor a free community screening of OUT IN THE SILENCE, a film that captures the remarkable chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson's wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown.

Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson's journey dramatically illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it.

The film will be shown at the B-CC auditorium beginning at 7:00pm.

The screening will be followed by a Q & A  session with filmmakers Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer.

Deadlines are fast approaching on many fronts so read on. But first, thanks to all who stopped by Vapiano's for Mom's Nite Out last Thursday - everyone agreed that it's an event that bears repeating...frequently!

If your child wants to participate in one or more of the many fantastic after school offerings, you only have 4 more days to register. The deadline has been extended to Friday, April 1st. We have space left in many programs, and need more participation to be able to offer such a great variety of classes.

Parents, I really, really, really hope you'll come to the annual Cultural Arts Cocktail Party & Fundraiser on Friday, April 8th. See story below for more details, but it promises to be a great spring evening out - lots of fun, and for a great cause too. But it's only going to be successful if lots of people attend - please send in your rsvp today!

Finallly, it's time to start thinking about next year. I'm sorry to say that my youngest is moving on to B-CC, but I want to be sure to leave the PTA in great hands. And that means you! How do you want to be involved at Westland? There are so many options - from PTA board postions, to chairing an event, to working at the school store...I'll be sending out more information on various options shortly, but please don't hestitate to contact me if you'd like to throw your name in the hat or claim that special job you've been eyeing! My e-mail is alysa@comcast.net and the nominating committee and I would love to hear from you.

After-School Registration Deadline Extended!
After School ActivitiesThe spring after-school session starts Tuesday April 5th, and the registration deadline has been extended to Friday, April 1 (no joke!).

Many of our classes are undersubscribed - if we don't get more participants, they just won't happen. We need more kids in babysitting, photography, cooking, flag football, and pretty much everything else! If you've already registered for one of these programs, talk it up with your friends and see if they'll join you.

Just click here to check out all our great spring programming! Follow the simple registration instructions, and you're all set.
Celebrate Westland's Cultural Arts - Please Join Us!
Theatre Masks
The PTA is throwing a wonderful party on Friday, April 8th from 6:30-9:30 at the home of Shelagh Meehan & Jordan Smyth to support Westland's cultural arts programming. The food and drink promises to be fantastic, and the company will be as well! Principal Danny Vogelman will be there, as will all the members of Westland's administrative team and hopefully many teachers and staff.

By way of background, one of the highlights of the spring semester is the two-week-long Shakespeare residency in which every student gets to participate.  Underwriting the residency is one of the PTA's single biggest budget expeditures. It's a great bargain at just under $13 per student, but that still comes to $13,000.

To rsvp and/or make a donation, just click here to head to Westland's webpage. Click on the link under "News". You can either register and pay on-line, or you can print out the rsvp form and mail it back, together with a check. Whichever option you choose, please do it today - we really hope to see you there, and really need your support!
Committee Identifies Site for New Middle School

As part of the 2011-2016 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) adopted on November 18, 2010, the Board of Education recommended that a site selection process be implemented in 2011 to identify a second middle school site to serve students in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Cluster.

Over the winter, MCPS convened a Site Selection Advisory Committee that considered ten potential candidate sites.  Committee members included representatives of all B-CC cluster schools, as well as various community representatives. Considerations included sufficient acreage, access, and affordablity.

The Site Selection Advisory Committee recommended that a 17.01-acre parcel, known as the Rosemary Hills/Lyttonsville Local Park, currently owned by the Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission (MNCPPC) be selected for the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Middle School #2.  The site presently houses the Coffield Community Center, and the school would be co-located with that facility.

The Board of Education will consider the recommendation at its meeting tonite (Monday, March 28th).

New BCCcommunity Listserve Established!

As part of a continuing effort to streamline B-CCnet (B-CC high school's parent listserve), a new community listserve has been established - BCCcommunity. B-CCnet is now a moderated list serve limited to postings directly related to B-CC.

Westland-net does not suffer from quite the overwhelming volume of
off topic (or OT) messages that were inundating B-CCnet. However, to make sure it stays that way, please join BCCcommunity and post all off-topic messages there instead of posting them on Westland-net!!!You'll reach a wider audience, and can help us avoid switching to a moderated list serve.

Over 500 people have already subscribed to BCCcommunity, and it is fast becoming an effective on-line marketplace, both for those seeking and those offering items and recommendations. The more people who join, the more effective it will become!

To sign-up for BCCcommunity, just send an email with your full name to: BCCcommunity-subscribe@yahoogroups.com You will get an
automated message back asking you to confirm that you want to join the group. Please look for this message and reply to it. Your request won't go through unless you do. And, if you haven't heard from the BCCcommunity group within 24 hours, please let moderator Sarah Morse know and she will add you. (The system is not 100% perfect.)
