Out in the Silence
....................................
On Wednesday, May 4th, the Westland PTA joins with the B-CC PTSA to sponsor a free community screening of OUT IN THE SILENCE, a film that captures the remarkable chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson's wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown.
Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson's journey dramatically illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it.
The film will be shown at the B-CC auditorium beginning at 7:00pm.
The screening will be followed by a Q & A session with filmmakers Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer.

First of all, congratulations to Westland staff and students for getting through MSA's! It's an enormous administrative task, undertaken with unfailing good humor and grace. I'm sure everyone looks forward to getting back to the usual routine.
We've got lots going on for both students and parents alike in the weeks before spring break. Please register this week for spring after school classes and clubs - the selection is great - see story below.
For parents, please mark your calendars for April 8th! It's the annual Cultural Arts Cocktail Party & Fundraiser. See story below for more details, but it promises to be a great spring evening out - lots of fun, and for a great cause too.
Don't forget the informal Mom's Night Out this Thursday, March 24 from 8-10 at Vapiano's in Bethesda (corner of Hampden & Woodmont). No need to rsvp - just show up, reconnect with old friends and meet new ones, and let's start off the spring right!

Last Chance to Register for After-School Programs!
 The spring after-school session starts Tuesday April 5th, and the registration deadline is Friday, March 25th. Just click here to check out all our great spring programming! Follow the simple registration instructions, and you're all set. Many of the class sizes are limited, so don't delay to ensure you get your first choice.
NEWS FLASH! Due to popular demand, we added lacrosse to the line-up, so now girls will have a chance to play 3 weeks of field hockey, 3 weeks of lacrosse, and whatever they prefer on the 7th week! |

Celebrate Westland's Cultural Arts!
 As many of you know and those who are new to Westland will discover, one of the highlights of the spring semester is the two-week-long Shakespeare residency in which every student gets to participate. The PTA and Westland staff have worked with the Maryland Shakespeare Company over several years now to perfect a program specifically tailored to Westland's students. This year, the residency will begin on April 27th.
Underwriting the residency is one of the PTA's single biggest budget expeditures. It's a great bargain at just under $13 per student, but that still comes to $13,000. To help raise those funds, we're throwing a party on Friday, April 8th from 6:30-9:00pm at the home of Shelagh Meehan & Jordan Smyth!

Free Hip Hop Dance Class a Hit!
The Westland PTA partnered with Joy of Motion Dance Center to offer a free hip hop  dance class last Wednesday after school. Participants were selected by lottery, and had a great time!
Joy of Motion is offering Westland students 10% off youth summer camps, intensives and classes. Just use the following code: MWEST2011 and register by April 30, 2011. Go to www.joyofmotion.org for a list of camps and classes. |
